Gennady Leontyevich Sobolev was a Soviet and Russian historian of twentieth century Russia, best known for his work on the Russian Revolution of 1917 and on the siege of Leningrad, which he had lived through as a child. A doctor of historical sciences, an Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation and an honorary professor of Saint Petersburg State University, he wrote more than 300 scholarly works and founded a school of historians of the revolution and the Civil War.

He was born in Leningrad on 6 July 1935, the son of a marking worker at the Kirov plant. His father went to the front in the Second World War and was killed. During the blockade of the city, Sobolev and his brother were saved from starvation by their mother.

Sobolev graduated from the history faculty of Leningrad State University in 1959 as a student of the historian Sigizmund Valk. He then joined the Leningrad branch of the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences, rising from junior researcher in 1961 to senior researcher in 1969. His candidate dissertation of 1966 was on Leningrad scientists during the war, and in 1974 he earned his doctorate with a monograph on the revolutionary consciousness of the workers and soldiers of Petrograd in 1917. He taught at the Herzen Pedagogical Institute and from 1974 to 1981 at the Krupskaya Institute of Culture, was confirmed as a professor in 1980, and from 1986 worked at Leningrad, later Saint Petersburg, State University.

His books included studies of the Petrograd garrison in 1917, of American writing on the October Revolution, and of the role of German money in the revolution, published as Russian Revolution and "German Gold" in 2002 and followed by The Secret Ally in 2009. In later life he returned to the blockade in a multi-volume history, Leningrad in the Struggle for Survival in the Blockade, which won the History category of the national Best Books and Publishers of the Year award in 2015. He was named an Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation in 2007.

Sobolev died in Saint Petersburg on 19 October 2026, aged 91. His death was announced that day by Marina Shishkina, a deputy of the city's Legislative Assembly, who offered condolences to his son Ivan, his family, colleagues and students. No cause of death was given.
