Saw this pop up on my feed and it stopped me cold. Lost my own grandad not even a year ago, same kind of quiet ending, hospital room, nobody saying much about why. 82 years old and still out fishing when he could. Sending love to his family, this one hurts different.

Gerald Wayne "Butch" Lank was a lifelong Delaware resident and United States Navy veteran who spent most of his career working in automotive parts in his hometown of Milford. He was born on February 29, 1944, in Milford, Delaware, and remained in the state for the whole of his life.
Lank served his country in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1966. After completing his military service, he returned to Milford and built a long working life in the automotive parts trade, a field that matched his steady, dependable temperament. He was especially known for his many years working for I.G. Burton in Milford, where colleagues and customers came to know him as a kind and polite man whose manner left a lasting impression on those around him. Outside of work, particularly in his younger years, he enjoyed fishing, a pastime that gave him pleasure and time outdoors.
Lank was not a celebrity or a holder of public office. His story matters in the way that many ordinary American lives do: as a record of quiet, decades long service, first to his country through the Navy, and then to his community through steady work and personal decency. He represents a generation of Delaware veterans who came home from military service and spent the rest of their working lives in the trades and small businesses that kept towns like Milford running.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Lank, his mother, Retta Lane, and his wife, Marian "Pat" Lank, who died on September 22, 2020. He is survived by his brother, David Lane, and sister in law, Linette Lane, his sister, Carolyn Lank, and his nieces, Valerie Lane, Natalie Lane, and Audrey Lane.
Gerald Wayne "Butch" Lank died on October 17, 2026, at Bayhealth Sussex Campus in Delaware, at the age of 82. His cause of death has not been made public. A visitation is scheduled for October 25, 2026, at Berry-Short Funeral Home in Milford, to be followed by a graveside service at Milford Community Cemetery.
