Göksel Arsoy, one of the defining leading men of Turkey's Yeşilçam golden age of cinema, died on 5 October 2026 at the age of 90. Known to generations of Turkish filmgoers as the industry's "Altın Çocuk," or Golden Child, he built a career spanning more than six decades as an actor, singer, producer and aviator.
Arsoy was born on 15 March 1936 in Kayseri. He was studying economics at Istanbul University and working near Yeşilköy Airport when he was drawn into cinema, making his screen debut in 1958 in Kara Günlerim. He went on to appear in dozens of films, most memorably opposite actress Belgin Doruk, and became one of the most recognisable faces of Turkish popular cinema through the late 1950s and 1960s. His fair hair and blue eyes, paired with an easy screen charisma, earned him the Golden Child nickname that followed him for the rest of his life.
Beyond acting, Arsoy pursued a genuine passion for aviation. He produced and starred in the 1963 film Şafak Bekçileri, directed by Halit Refiğ and centred on the air force, and during filming he reportedly flew a jet past the sound barrier himself. He also recorded music as a singer and was active in sport, interests that at times pulled him away from filmmaking. Throughout his career he maintained a close friendship with fellow leading man Ayhan Işık, who was also his principal box office rival. In 2024, Arsoy was honoured with Turkey's Presidential Grand Award for Culture and Art in recognition of his contribution to Turkish cinema.
Arsoy died on 5 October 2026, just months after celebrating his 90th birthday with his family in March. According to his child, Aşkım Arsoy, who announced the death and described his final days publicly, the actor had no serious underlying illness but had grown increasingly frail in his final two years as his eyesight failed, limiting his mobility. He reportedly remained in generally normal health until two days before his death and was never hospitalised. No official medical cause of death has been released by the family.
The news prompted an outpouring of tributes from Turkey's cultural establishment and the public. Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy issued a statement of condolence describing Arsoy as one of the faces etched into the memory of Yeşilçam cinema. Arsoy's funeral was expected to take place on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, with further details to be announced by his family.
