My cousin called from Vinkovci to tell me. Put ka sreći was playing at my wedding, forty years later still gets me.

Goran Bare was one of the defining voices of Croatian rock. As the founder, singer and lyricist of the Vinkovci band Majke, and later with his backing group Plaćenici, he spent four decades writing raw, confessional songs such as Teške boje, Mene ne zanima, Vrijeme je da se krene, Budi ponosan, Put ka sreći and A ti još plačeš. HRT called him a symbol of rebellion in Croatian rock.
He was born on 16 August 1965 in Vinkovci, the second child of a poor working-class family, and grew up largely on the street. As a boy he played football, and at 12 he was already putting together bands with classmates. In 1980, at 15, he and his friend Marin Pokrovac formed Duo debili and played to about a thousand people at the Vinkovci youth centre.
At the end of 1984 he founded Majke and decided music would be his life. The band's early demos came out on Zdenko Franjić's independent label Slušaj najglasnije. In February 1989 Pokrovac and two close friends, Goran Matošević Bratanac and Pavo Pap, were killed when their car went into the Bosut river after a rehearsal. The loss pushed Bare deeper into the heroin addiction that marked the next 15 years of his life, and he left Vinkovci for Zagreb.
Majke's first album, Razum i bezumlje (1990), was named rock album of the year by Croatian critics, but the war broke the band apart. In 1991 he recorded a solo mini album under the alias Hali Gali Halid. He rebuilt Majke in Zagreb and released Razdor (1993), Milost (1994) and, in 1996, Vrijeme je da se krene, the band's most successful record. A live album and Put do srca sunca (1998) followed.
His private life was marked by tragedy. He married his longtime girlfriend Mirjana in 1993, and their son Miran was born in November 1994. On 2 December 1995 Mirjana died of an overdose, aged 27. In 1997 he met his second wife, Tamara, and with her support and treatment in Zagreb he finally got clean of alcohol and heroin. They divorced in 2009. He spoke openly about addiction and about living with bipolar disorder.
In 2000 he left Majke and launched a solo career with Plaćenici. Their album Izgubljen i nađen won the Porin for rock album of the year in 2001, and Put ka sreći later became the campaign anthem for Ivo Josipović in the 2009 presidential election. He reunited Majke in 2007, and their 2011 album Teške boje won six Porin awards from 11 nominations. Nuspojave (2018), inspired by krautrock, David Bowie and Iggy Pop's The Idiot, won another Porin for rock album.
In late September 2026 he fell ill on stage at the Modro i zeleno festival in Makarska, and the concert was stopped during the first song. The band announced a two-month break so he could rest. On 9 October 2026 his bandmates Mario Rašić and Alen Tibljaš found him dead in his flat in Zagreb at about 1pm. He was 61. They told Večernji list they had spent the past five years trying, without success, to persuade him to seek treatment for his health problems. The cause of death was not made public.
