Epaminondas Xavier Gracindo (1943-05-21 to 2026-09-01), known to Brazil as Gracindo Júnior or Gracindo Jr., spent more than six decades proving that a famous surname can be a starting point rather than a ceiling. Born in Rio de Janeiro on 1943-05-21, he was the son of Paulo Gracindo (1911-1995), one…

Early life

Born 1943-05-21 in Rio de Janeiro as Epaminondas Xavier Gracindo, son of actor Paulo Gracindo and Dulce Xavier de Araújo. Grew up inside radio and theatre culture. At about 15 (1958/1959) he auditioned secretly for Rádio Nacional and began work as radio actor, writer and DJ.

Education

Studied psychology at university level but did not practice, choosing performance instead (Memória Globo). Formal craft training was the stage and radio floor rather than a conservatory degree in the sources checked.

Radio and theatre beginnings

Rádio Nacional work in the late 1950s/early 1960s; theatre debut in A Escada; 1960s classics and new Brazilian playwrights (Oduvaldo Vianna Filho, Leilah Assumpção, Millôr Fernandes). After 1964 he was barred from radio as a Communist Party militant with other artists, already pivoting to television.

Globo pioneer and Casarao

Contracted by December 1964; inaugural Globo cast; early novelas; co-starring with Paulo Gracindo in O Bem-Amado and as young João Maciel in O Casarão (1976). Directorial track: 6 p.m. nucleus, Marron Glacé, Os Trapalhões, Sítio, Você Decide, Explode Coração Roma nucleus.

Manchete, Record, Portugal and later screen

Manchete romantic leads with Maitê Proença (A Marquesa de Santos, Dona Beija); Globo returns (Mandala, O Salvador da Pátria, Celebridade, Aquarela do Brasil); Record (Cidadão Brasileiro, Poder Paralelo, Rei Davi as Saul); TVI Ouro Verde; HBO/Amazon/GNT credits; film from Trapalhões features to The Emerald Forest and A Queda (2022).

Personal life

Long marriage to Dayse/Daisy Poli (from 1976; brief early-1980s separation, then resumed). Children: Yan; Gabriel Gracindo; Pedro Gracindo; Daniela Duarte (with Débora Duarte). Stepson Bernardo Poli noted by IMDb and Leonardo Brício. Seven grandchildren per MinC note. Lived in Rio; late residence Barra da Tijuca.

Beliefs and views

1960s Communist Party militancy and radio ban under the dictatorship (Memória Globo). Later interviews stressed craft ethics learned from his father, criticism of industrial TV quality standards versus artisan theatre (Folha 2005), and deep loyalty to stage work as the work that fed his children.

Legacy and impact

Bridge between radio's golden age, Globo's founding generation, Manchete's 1980s peak, and twenty-first-century multiplatform casting. Symbol of a father-son craft dynasty without being only Paulo's son. Ministry of Culture and Rio's acting governor issued official notes calling him fundamental to Brazilian dramaturgy.

Awards and honours

No single dominant national lifetime-award headline located in the 2026 obituaries scanned; honour is institutional memory (Memória Globo profile; MinC condolence; Museu da TV biography) and enduring audience recall of O Casarão and Dona Beija.

Controversies

Documented: 1964 radio ban for political militancy; 1970s press attention to relationship/pregnancy with Débora Duarte while unmarried (Wikipedia PT citing Aplauso/Débora Duarte biography); public dispute with SBT alongside Maitê Proença and others over Dona Beija rebroadcast rights (Wikipedia PT).

Death

Died at home in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, on the evening of 2026-09-01, about 22:00 BRT, aged 83, with wife and children present; Leonardo Brício also present. Confirmed by son Pedro Gracindo to G1. Natural causes (G1; Agência Brasil). Portuguese Wikipedia: Alzheimer's since 2020. Wake and cremation 2026-09-03 at Crematório e Cemitério da Penitência, Caju (chapel 6; cremation 14:10).
