Birth, war exile, and homecoming

Born 21 February 1937 at Skaugum, Asker, to Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha; sisters Ragnhild and Astrid. Baptised 31 March 1937 in the Palace Chapel. WWII exile with mother and sisters to Sweden then Washington, D.C.; father and grandfather in London. Returned 1945; Smestad school; confirmation May 1953. Mother died 1954.

Cathedral school, Military Academy, Balliol

Oslo katedralskole to 1955. Cavalry officers' candidate school, Trandum (1956-1957). Norwegian Military Academy 1957-1959. Balliol College, Oxford (from 1960): history, economics, politics; rowing. Later honorary DCL Oxford (2006) and other honorary doctorates (Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde, Waseda, Pacific Lutheran).

Crown Prince, marriage, and sailing

Became Crown Prince on 21 September 1957. Majority oath 21 February 1958. Married Sonja Haraldsen 29 August 1968 after nine-year relationship initially resisted as a commoner marriage. Olympic sailor 1964/1968/1972; World Championship medals including gold 1987; European gold 2005. Founding president Norwegian Sailing Federation 1970.
