He made more than 340 senior league appearances across Middlesbrough, Third Lanark, Falkirk, Dumbarton, Darlington, Hartlepool, Scunthorpe United, Stockport County and IK Sirius. He died on 11 September 2026 at the age of 82.
Kirk was born on 25 August 1944 in Saltcoats, Scotland. He began with Ardeer Recreation before a brief spell at Middlesbrough that brought one Football League appearance in 1963-64. Returning north he played for Third Lanark, Falkirk and Dumbarton, scoring 13 league goals in 32 matches for Dumbarton in 1966-67.
He then settled into English football. At Darlington (1967-69) he made 62 league appearances and scored seven goals. A season at Hartlepool followed (45 appearances, five goals) before the move that defined his English career: Scunthorpe United from 1970 to 1973. For the Iron he made 112 league appearances and scored 16 goals, the highest totals of his career at a single club. Scunthorpe United later remembered him among its notable postwar players.
Two seasons at Stockport County (68 appearances, seven goals) preceded a final chapter in Sweden with IK Sirius in Division 2 Norra in 1975 (nine appearances, two goals). Across the Football League alone he accumulated well over 200 appearances.
Scunthorpe United announced his death on 11 September 2026, saying the club was saddened to learn of the passing of the former player at 82 and sending thoughts to his family and friends. A cause of death was not made public.
