Hartmut H. Forche was a German theatre director, translator, author and actor who spent more than half a century bringing musicals to German stages. He directed well over 200 productions of plays, opera, operetta and above all musicals, and his German versions of Broadway, West End and Spanish shows, among them Me and My Girl, Singin' in the Rain, High Society and Der Medicus, were staged across the German-speaking world.

He was born in Göttingen on 1 July 1945. After his Abitur at the Tellkampfschule in Hannover he studied German literature, art history and philosophy at Tübingen, Cologne and Hannover, attending lectures by Hans Mayer, Walter Jens and Ernst Bloch, and then trained as an actor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover.

From 1968 to 1973 he worked at the Staatstheater Hannover as an actor, assistant director and dramaturg, making his directing debut with David Storey's Home, and toured South America, Spain and Portugal for the Goethe-Institut. At the 1973 Salzburg Festival he played Lucifer in Carl Orff's De temporum fine comoedia, directed by August Everding with Herbert von Karajan conducting. He then served as senior director and deputy to the artistic director in Dortmund, Pforzheim, Bielefeld and Wilhelmshaven before going freelance in 1979.

As a freelance director he worked in houses from Kassel and Leipzig to St. Gallen and Lübeck, and he was responsible for several German premieres, including Me and My Girl in Coburg, High Society in Neustrelitz and Mar i Cel at the Halle opera house. He staged Les Misérables, Sweeney Todd and an open air Rocky Horror Show in Coburg that drew more than 20,000 people. He wrote the musical Rasputin, premiered at the Staatsoperette Dresden, and the drama Katharina Kepler. With his co-translator Jaime Román Briones he brought Spanish hits to Germany, crowned by their award winning translation of Der Medicus.

In later years he wrote reviews for the trade magazine blickpunkt musical, taught song interpretation at Osnabrück, sat on the jury of the German Musical Theatre Prize in 2015 and advised the Luisenburg Festival in Wunsiedel. He made Barcelona his adopted home.

Forche had been in poor health for several months. He died on 27 October 2026, aged 81, and blickpunkt musical announced his death that evening, remembering a critical but always constructive colleague who took the genre deeply seriously. He was survived by his partner, Jaime.

My grandfather was sick for months before he went too, so reading 'in poor health for several months' just gutted me a little. I saw a Der Medicus production in Hamburg during a semester abroad and didn't understand half the German but felt everything. 81 is not old enough.
