My mom called me crying when this hit the local news out here, she couldn't even get the words out at first. Five years old. I keep thinking about the five hours before anyone called for help.

Izabella Loving was a five year old girl from Cold Springs, Nevada, a small community near Reno, whose death in April 2025 was later ruled a homicide and whose parents were charged with her murder. She was not a public figure in life. She became known to the public only after her death, when investigators alleged that she had been subjected to prolonged abuse and neglect inside her own home. Her case, often referred to in local coverage by the nickname "Izzy," has since become one of the most closely watched criminal prosecutions in the Reno area.
According to charging documents, Izabella endured abuse over an extended period before she died. Andrea and Nicholas Loving, who are in their 30s, pleaded not guilty to murder charges, and the girl died from bacterial pneumonia, malnutrition, medical neglect and blunt force trauma, according to her autopsy. Investigators alleged she was physically abused, left alone in isolation, confined to certain spaces, and deprived of food while others in the household ate, often given only a piece of bread when she did eat. The criminal complaint against her parents claims they did not enroll Izabella in school even though she was old enough, allegedly in order to hide the abuse.
Izabella was found dead in early April 2025 after being kept in a locked, makeshift five by five foot enclosure, and her father, Nicholas Loving, was arrested and charged with child abuse causing substantial bodily harm in connection with her death. The Washoe County medical examiner later ruled her death a homicide, determining the cause to be bacterial pneumonia, with multiple blunt force injuries, malnutrition, dehydration and medical neglect listed as significant contributing conditions. According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies were called to the family's home at 6:50 a.m. on April 3 after Izabella was found unresponsive, and her father had allegedly waited roughly five hours to call 911. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
Months after the initial arrest, prosecutors expanded the case. Andrea Loving, who had already been charged with child abuse resulting in substantial bodily harm, had her complaint amended to include a first degree murder charge, following Nicholas Loving's own murder charge, which came after a four month investigation into their daughter's death. Prosecutors alleged Nicholas killed Izabella through repeated physical violence, and that Andrea aided and abetted the abuse, including helping to conceal some of her injuries before she appeared in public. Both parents have pleaded not guilty and remain in custody as the case moves through Washoe County's court system.
The case has drawn sustained attention from the Cold Springs and Reno community, with residents holding vigils and expressing outrage over the circumstances of her death. Andrea Loving was arrested in late July 2025 on the initial abuse charge, with investigators alleging she had abused Izabella daily. Washoe County prosecutors have said they are seeking the death penalty against Nicholas Loving, while Nevada law does not permit that penalty to be sought against Andrea Loving. A trial for both parents has been scheduled for August 2027. As of today, September 23, 2026, the case remains active, with the Lovings continuing to appear in court on pretrial matters.
