Jennifer Liang was a pediatrician who cared for the children of Coral Springs, Florida, for more than three decades. From the late 1980s until her retirement she practised at Coral Square Pediatrics, where generations of local families came to know her as a gentle, sharp and dependable doctor.
She was born in Taiwan on 20 July 1952, the sixth of seven children, with five older sisters and a younger brother. Her family's story was shaped by displacement: according to a family remembrance, her parents had fled their ancestral home in Canton, now Guangzhou, for Taiwan amid the upheaval of the Chinese civil war, while her paternal grandmother and other relatives sought refuge in Hong Kong. A maternal uncle who had lived in Washington, D.C., since 1945 later helped her mother emigrate to the United States, opening the way for the family to make a new home there.
Liang first trained as a pharmacist, graduating from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Florida. She then studied medicine at the Universidad Central del Este in San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic, graduating in 1985, and completed her pediatric training at Miami Children's Hospital, now Nicklaus Children's Hospital. She began practising pediatrics in Coral Springs in 1987 and was board certified in the specialty.
Fluent in English, Chinese and Spanish, she could speak with many of the families of a diverse South Florida city in their own language. She took a special interest in international adoptions and was involved with the support group Families with Children from China, and she enjoyed giving educational talks in the community, playing tennis and travelling with her husband and son.
Shortly after she retired, Liang was diagnosed with mesothelioma. For about two and a half years she underwent treatment while keeping homes in Florida and Los Angeles, where she was cared for at UCLA. She died on 23 September 2026, aged 74, surrounded by her family. She was survived by her husband, Dr. Philip Shen, her son, Kevin Shen, five siblings and nine nieces and nephews, and was predeceased by her parents, Arthur H. Liang and Kwai-San Liang, and her sister Victoria Papanos.
A service celebrating her life was held on 17 October 2026 at First Christian Church of Margate. Her death was reported by Coral Springs Talk on 20 October, which described her as a familiar and caring presence to the many patients and families she served.
