A man who chose duty over fame. Jorge Messi built something lasting by staying close, listening hard, and never seeking the spotlight. That is a life well lived.

Kept Leo grounded when the world went crazy. That's harder than any contract.

I was born the same year as Jorge. Grew up watching Lionel's rise and never once thought about the father standing behind it all, making the quiet decisions. Now I understand. A chemical technician who became the architect of something that changed football. Rest well.

Never met him but watched what he built. Quiet guy, stayed in the background while the world watched his son. That takes a different kind of strength.

Early life in Rosario

Jorge Horacio Messi was born on April 24, 1958, in Rosario, Santa Fe Province, Argentina. Wikipedia notes Italian and Spanish family descent. He grew up in Rosario's football culture, played midfield, and entered the Newell's Old Boys youth system before leaving the sport to complete mandatory military service. After service he trained and worked as a chemical technician in the metallurgical industry, including for Acindar, while remaining involved in amateur football and youth coaching.

Education and technical training

Public obituaries and Wikipedia identify him as a chemical technician rather than listing a university degree. Formal schooling details beyond that technical qualification were not made public in the major English and Argentine obituaries consulted. Do not invent institutions or graduation years.

From Acindar and Grandoli to global sports agent

Jorge's first public sporting role was local: coaching children at Abanderado Grandoli, including Lionel from age four, then supporting the Newell's pathway. The decisive career turn came around 2000, when he accompanied 13-year-old Lionel to Barcelona so the club could fund growth-hormone treatment and place him in La Masia. Jorge stayed in Spain while much of the family returned to…

Marriage, children, Rosario roots

Jorge was married to Celia Maria Cuccittini. They had four children: Rodrigo, Matias, Lionel Andres, and Maria Sol. Daughter-in-law Antonela Roccuzzo and grandsons Thiago, Mateo and Ciro are widely documented through Lionel's family life. The family kept strong ties to Rosario businesses and to Newell's. Private farewell ceremonies in August 2026 were held at Cementerio El Prado in Perez, Santa…

Privacy, family first, low public profile

Jorge gave few long interviews. The values most often attributed to him come from Lionel and from institutional tributes: protect the son, stay close in hard moments, prefer silent work over celebrity. A 2007 recorded message resurfaced after his death: Jorge told young Lionel that above being a good footballer he was an excellent person. UNICEF Argentina called him committed…

The scaffold behind a football century

Jorge's legacy is structural as much as sentimental. Without the Barcelona relocation and medical funding fight, Lionel's career timeline changes. Without decades of contract and image-rights management, the Messi commercial architecture looks different. Newell's called him the pillar who, with Celia, supported the best player of all time. Barcelona thanked him for trusting the club with Leo's beginnings and peak…

Honours and public recognition

No major personal sporting trophies or state decorations for Jorge himself were listed in the Wikipedia entry or same-day obituaries. Public honours after death included AFA resolution for a minute of silence and black armbands across Argentine football, flags at half-mast at AFA facilities, Newell's flag at half-mast, and tributes from clubs worldwide. Treat these as memorial gestures, not career…

Spanish tax cases

Documented controversy centres on Spanish tax proceedings over Lionel Messi's image-rights structures. In 2013 authorities accused father and son of using foreign corporate structures to reduce tax. In 2016 both were convicted; sentences were suspended with fines. Lionel testified that he signed what his father and advisors presented. A further Spanish proceeding reported around 2019 was closed in 2021 per…

Illness, death in Rosario, farewell

In June 2026 the family confirmed a health situation and asked for privacy after false death rumours during Argentina's World Cup opener. Jorge spent final months alternating between medical care in Rosario and home. He died at Sanatorio Centro at 02:00 on August 8, 2026, age 68. Cause was not officially disclosed by the clinic; Clarin cited cancer via close sources. Lionel flew from the United States to Rosario. Wake and burial were private at Cementerio El Prado, Perez. On August 12 Lionel published his Instagram tribute and voiced doubts about continuing his playing career.
