Josep Juanpere i Miret

Josep Juanpere i Miret was a Catalan architect who led the Barcelona firm GCA Architects for about four decades, becoming one of the most respected names in Catalan design and construction. Over the course of his career he built close ties with the Catalan business and professional elite, and was remembered by friends such as Cuatrecasas law firm founder Emilio Cuatrecasas Figueras and the late Mango founder Isak Andic. He was 72 years old at the time of his death.

Juanpere died on 26 December 2025 at his second home in Baqueira, in the municipality of Naut Aran in the Vall d'Aran, Lleida province, where he had gone to spend the Christmas holidays. According to reports, he fell ill on the night of 24 December after Christmas Eve dinner and was taken to the Hospital de Vielha, where he was kept under observation for several hours before being discharged with what appeared to be a case of indigestion. He continued to feel unwell and died two days later, on 26 December, at the holiday property.

A first autopsy found no signs of criminal violence and recorded the cause of death as natural, attributing it to a coronary crisis suffered while he was on holiday. Three months later it emerged that a Catalan judge in Vielha had opened an investigation into the circumstances of the death, although at that stage the inquiry was not reported to be pointing at any particular suspect. His death, and the news that followed, stunned the circle of Catalan business and professional figures who had known him, and an obituary notice placed in La Vanguardia by Emilio Cuatrecasas described him as embodying elegance and charisma.

Nearly nine months after his death, the case took a dramatic turn. In September 2026, the Mossos d'Esquadra announced the arrest in Madrid of his 65 year old wife or partner, who was with him at the Baqueira property when he died, on suspicion of involvement in his homicide. Reports have also referred to a separate key witness in the case being in a coma, though the exact circumstances connecting that person to the investigation have not been fully clarified in public reporting. The case remains open, and it has not been established whether Juanpere's death will ultimately be confirmed as a natural event or as a homicide.

Juanpere's death has left both grief and unanswered questions. He is remembered by colleagues and friends as an architect of taste and refinement whose work and personality left a mark on Barcelona's professional and social circles, even as the manner of his death continues to be examined by the Catalan justice system.
