Józef Lipień was a Polish Greco-Roman wrestler who competed at four Olympic Games and won the silver medal in the 57 kg category at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He was world champion in 1973 and twice a world silver medallist, and he spent most of his career with the club Wisłoka Dębica, where he later also coached.
He was born on 6 February 1949 in Jaczków, near Kamienna Góra in Lower Silesia, into a large family. He was a twin: his brother Kazimierz, born a few minutes earlier, also became a wrestler and later an Olympic champion. Józef trained as a builder at a vocational school in Jelenia Góra, where a teacher, Juliusz Jaszczuk, introduced him to wrestling almost by chance. He wrestled for Karkonosze Jelenia Góra from 1965 and moved to Wisłoka Dębica in 1967.
He made the Polish Olympic team at 19 and competed in Mexico City in 1968, then in Munich in 1972 and Montreal in 1976, without reaching the podium. In 1973, at the World Championships in Tehran, he and Kazimierz both won gold medals, a rare double for twins. He added world silver medals in 1974 and 1975 and a European bronze in 1978, and was an eight-time Polish champion. For much of his career he wrestled at 57 kg, below his natural weight, so that he would not compete directly against his brother, which meant constantly cutting weight. At his fourth Games, in Moscow in 1980, he finally won an Olympic medal, losing the final to Shamil Serikov of the Soviet Union.
After retiring in 1981 he coached in Denmark, in Frederikshavn, and in Sweden, in Hörby, and later at Wisłoka Dębica from 1997 to 2000. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 1983. He was married to Bogusława. Kazimierz died in 2005. In 2024 the town of Dębica declared a Year of the Lipień Brothers, and in July 2025 a statue of the twins was unveiled on the square named after them.
Józef Lipień died on Sunday 25 October 2026, aged 77. The death was announced by the town of Dębica and confirmed by the Polish Wrestling Federation, which described him as an outstanding competitor, Olympian, world champion and coach who had a lasting place in the history of Polish wrestling. The cause of death was not made public.
