Only found out about the 1973 Blue Angels crash and the rebuild a few years back, watching a documentary on a flight home. Didn't know his name till then. 89 is a long run.

I keep coming back to this because I read about the ICC case years ago, not the man himself, just the case, how the charges were never confirmed back in 2011 and everyone moved on like it was settled. It wasn't settled. He worked for the UN until 2001, Kosovo of all places, and somehow kept drawing a paycheck while people were asking questions about 1994. I don't know why that detail sticks with me more than anything else. Edit, I looked it up again, it was an electronic data processing post, not glamorous, just a man at a desk. Still can't get past that nobody ever tried him in a courtroom, not once, in thirty some years.

saw this pop up on a feed I don't even remember opening and almost scrolled past it, fifteen years as rector of one university is longer than most college presidents here manage in a career, and he was still a working physicist that whole stretch too. 1995 to 2010, right through all that post Soviet rebuilding, can't imagine running a university through that. never heard the name before today, not gonna pretend otherwise. 78 years old. edit, just saw he got his doctorate back in 88, before any of that even started

90 is a long life. Two Olympic bronzes steering that eight, Rome and Tokyo both. Sorry for the loss to his family.

70. That's all I keep thinking. Hope Alison is doing okay.

My grandmother kept a transistor radio tuned to a Spanish station out of Mobile, and every New Year's Eve that anthem came on and she'd go quiet. 92. Didn't know the name till today, just the voice.

Colour photography wasn't serious until he made it serious. That matters.

Watched him pitch against the Braves in '77. Best arm I ever saw live.

Never saw him play live but read enough to know he was the real deal. Half back of that era.

My dad used to say the same about his playlists, always something you'd never heard before.

That book is worth finding, it's mostly about the people, not him.

The Lyn-Lake area wouldn't be what it is without what he built there.
