Karoline Heintz was an 18 year old athlete from Peters Township, Pennsylvania, who had just begun her college career as a soccer player at PennWest California when she was killed in August 2026.
Royce Moser and Rachel Moser are charged in the death of Karoline Heintz, Peters Township High School grad and PennWest California soccer player.
She had signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer there, the next chapter in an athletic path that had defined much of her teenage years.
Heintz's death became a national news story because of the deliberate way it unfolded.
Heintz had met with Royce Moser outside his father's residence in North Strabane to talk, and during the encounter, Royce Moser allegedly became angry, retrieved a large kitchen knife from inside the residence, and stabbed Heintz in the chest.
What followed, according to court documents, was an attempt to hide what had happened.
Investigators say Royce Moser then placed Heintz in the rear hatch area of the Jeep and drove to Beallsville, where his mother, Rachel Moser, resides, and she allegedly helped him.
He then drove his girlfriend's Jeep, as his mom followed behind in her car, to California Borough, where they left the vehicle near the library.
The investigation began just after midnight on August 20, 2026, when the California Police Department was asked to search for a Jeep Cherokee after Karoline Heintz failed to return to California University.
Royce Moser, 18, is charged with criminal homicide, and his mother, Rachel Moser, is charged with hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse and obstruction.
At a preliminary hearing in September, prosecutors said
text messages reveal Royce Moser asked Heintz to stop at his father's house on her way back to college for a hug and a kiss before later fatally stabbing her
, and that
Royce Moser made numerous Google searches, including "what does God say about murder," after allegedly killing
her.
Moser and his mother, Rachel Moser, are due back in court in October for their formal arraignment
, where both entered pleas of not guilty.
The case drew heavy attention in western Pennsylvania and beyond, both for the circumstances of a young athlete's death just as her college life was starting and for the allegations that a parent helped conceal it. As of today, funeral or memorial arrangements have not been made public.
