Kasey Redfern was an American football punter whose persistence carried him through seven National Football League organisations between 2014 and 2019. Undrafted out of Wofford College, he appeared in four regular season games for the Detroit Lions and the Atlanta Falcons, and later faced a three year fight with brain cancer with the same quiet resolve. He died on 13 October 2026, aged 35.

Redfern was born on 26 September 1991 in Jamestown, North Carolina, the son of Kevin and Kelly Redfern. At Ragsdale High School he was the starting kicker and punter for three seasons on teams that went 13-1 in both 2008 and 2009, was named All-State in 2009 and played in the Shrine Bowl. He was also an All-Region soccer goalkeeper, lettered in swimming and was a four-time scholar-athlete.

At Wofford, where he majored in accounting, he handled punts, kickoffs and field goals for the Terriers from 2010 to 2013. He made the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team, earned academic honours, and as a junior kicked a 53-yard field goal that set a school record.

After the 2014 draft passed him by, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars and then spent time with the San Diego Chargers, Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns, who acquired him in a trade for veteran punter Andy Lee. In 2017 the Detroit Lions named him their starting punter while Sam Martin was injured. In the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals he punted once for 50 yards, then tore his ACL and MCL and partially tore his patellar tendon when he was hit after trying to run with a bobbled snap. He fought back to sign with the Dallas Cowboys in 2019 and that October became Atlanta's third punter of the season, spending three weeks on the active roster. Across his NFL career he punted 10 times at an average of 42.1 yards.

In 2023 Redfern was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour and central nervous system lymphoma and began years of chemotherapy. His wife, Lauryl, shared the family's journey publicly. On his 35th birthday she wrote that he was moving to hospice care after doctors said further treatment was no longer viable. He died on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, survived by Lauryl and their sons, Ollie and Logan.

Friends, former teammates and Wofford's football community remembered him as a fighter of deep faith and a humble man who also coached young kickers. Rob Greene, a former NFL player and Texas Tech assistant coach, called him a great man, husband, father and friend.
