Vincent Pierre Claude Belorgey, known worldwide as Kavinsky, was a French DJ, record producer, and actor whose neon-soaked electronic music became a defining soundtrack of early twenty-first-century pop culture. Born in Paris on 31 July 1975 at Lariboisiere Hospital in the 10th arrondissement, he grew up around the Barbes neighbourhood. As a boy he learned piano at a local community centre, first on a melodica, then a Casio synthesizer and a Roland TR-808 drum machine. He later earned a technician diploma as a draftsman-model maker after repeating years in secondary school, and he held varied jobs before music took over, including mailroom work, telecom customer service, painting figurines, and warehouse work.
He grew up alongside filmmaker and musician Quentin Dupieux (Mr. Oizo). Belorgey discovered electronic music during military service and began acting in Dupieux's early films, including Nonfilm (2001). Further screen roles followed in Aaltra (2003), Atomik Circus (2004), Ultranova (2005), and Steak (2007), in which he played Dan, leader of the Chivers gang, opposite Eric and Ramzy. Music and film stayed intertwined: Dupieux encouraged his first productions and helped introduce his work to the Record Makers label.
Under the Kavinsky persona, Belorgey built a fictional mythology. The character had red eyes and blue skin. In the story, Kavinsky crashed a Ferrari Testarossa in 1986 and returned in 2006 as a zombie who makes electronic music. Belorgey preferred that mask over his own face on record sleeves. He said his tracks mixed memories of films and television from childhood into one continuous concept. The first single, Testarossa Autodrive (2005), led to the Teddy Boy EP, then 1986 (2007) and Blazer (2008). He toured with Daft Punk, The Rapture, Justice, and SebastiAn. A SebastiAn remix of Testarossa Autodrive appeared in Grand Theft Auto IV and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.
Global recognition arrived with Nightcall (2010), produced with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk and featuring Lovefoxxx of CSS. When Nicolas Winding Refn used the track over the opening of Drive (2011), Nightcall became an international hit and a diamond-certified cornerstone of French electro. Debut album OutRun (2013) reached number 2 in France and entered dance charts in the United States and United Kingdom, with singles including Roadgame, ProtoVision, and Odd Look (later also recorded with The Weeknd). After a long hiatus he returned with Reborn (2022), led by Renegade (with Cautious Clay) and Zenith. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games closing ceremony he performed Nightcall with Phoenix and Angele; a studio version of that collaboration reached number 3 in France and earned another diamond certification. He also performed Roadgame at the Paralympic closing ceremony. In 2025 he was named Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
Belorgey was found dead at his Paris home on 28 July 2026, three days before his 51st birthday. French media reported a pending investigation and a suspected stroke after days of headaches. President Emmanuel Macron called him a lasting source of French pride. Culture officials and artists including The Weeknd paid tribute. A funeral was held on 12 August 2026 at Eglise Saint-Pierre de Montmartre, followed by burial at Saint-Vincent Cemetery. His music, both danceable and nostalgic, remains a neon landmark of French electronic sound.
