Took my grandson to see Godzilla vs Kong in 2021 and it was the scenes with Jia signing to Kong that made him go quiet, he still does the wave she does. Eighteen years old. That's the part I can't get past.

Kaylee Beth Hottle (March 17, 2008 to July 21, 2026) was a deaf American actress who became one of the most visible young deaf performers in Hollywood through her role as Jia, the orphaned Iwi girl who communicates with Kong in American Sign Language, in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).
She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, into an all-deaf family. Her father's side of the family had four generations of deaf relatives, and she described herself as the fourth deaf generation in her family. Her parents are Joshua Hottle and Ketsi Hottle (also credited as Ketsi Carlson), and she had an older deaf sister and three younger hearing siblings. She was of Korean descent through her mother and described herself as half Caucasian and half Korean. American Sign Language was her native language. She grew up in a deaf community and attended the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, Texas, where she competed in track and field and was a senior at the time of her death.
Hottle began performing in commercials. In 2017, at age nine, she appeared with her own mother in an all-deaf Mother's Day commercial for the video relay service Convo. She also appeared in the informational project 10 Deaf Children: One Powerful Message (2018), which promoted support for deaf children and their right to language. The Convo commercial changed her life. Casting director Sarah Halley Finn was searching for a deaf girl to play the deaf character Jia, and an assistant director from Kong: Skull Island who had seen the Convo ad pointed the team toward Hottle.
Godzilla vs. Kong, directed by Adam Wingard, was her feature film debut. It opened internationally on March 24, 2021 and in the United States on March 31, 2021. Jia's silent bond with Kong became the emotional center of the film. Rebecca Hall, who played Jia's adoptive mother Dr. Ilene Andrews, and Alexander Skarsgard both learned ASL so they could talk with her directly on set, and Skarsgard later praised her professionalism and how quickly she absorbed direction. Hottle admitted she had never been interested in monster movies before she was cast, and her father helped her understand the genre. Also in 2021 she appeared as Joon in the Magnum P.I. episode "Texas Wedge".
She returned as Jia in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on March 25, 2024. The sequel put Jia's search for her Iwi roots and her relationship with Dr. Andrews at the heart of the story, and it became the highest grossing film in the Monsterverse. Hottle worked with an ASL master on set who translated her English lines into ASL, and she developed Jia together with Wingard, adding her own personality. The role earned her a nomination for Best Performance by a Younger Actor at the 52nd Saturn Awards. She was later listed in the cast of the film What Doesn't Kill Us, alongside fellow deaf actor Alaqua Cox.
In interviews Hottle spoke plainly about representation. She said ASL is "just a language, and deaf is just deaf," that deaf people "can do many things, just not hear," and that the industry needed more deaf actresses and crew so that deafness becomes normal on screen. She hoped her role would show young deaf girls that they could do anything. "There are no limits," she said in 2024.
In the early morning of July 21, 2026, Hottle was one of two passengers in a car driven by a 19 year old man that left a two lane road in Ijamsville, Frederick County, Maryland, and struck a culvert at about 2:52 a.m. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office said excessive speed was believed to be a factor. She was flown by Maryland State Police to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead. She was 18. The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death multiple blunt force injuries and the manner accidental. Her father announced her death in ASL in a Facebook video, publicly forgave the driver, and said the family was grateful for the 18 years they had together.
Tributes came from Rebecca Hall, Millie Bobby Brown, Dan Stevens, Eiza Gonzalez, Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, Alaqua Cox, Legendary Entertainment, Warner Bros. and the Texas School for the Deaf. On August 3, 2026, a memorial service was held at the Texas School for the Deaf, with speeches from her sister Jasmine, her father and classmates. The program read "Forever a Ranger. Forever in our hearts." She was buried the same day in Kyle, Texas.

In their own words
“I'm acting in monster movies as a deaf person. I want deaf people to know that they can do that too, just like me. There are no limits.”
Interview with The AU Review, March 2024
“I think some people see ASL and deafness as a barrier or a gift, but it's just a language, and deaf is just deaf. We can do many things, just not hear. We need more deaf actresses and crew in the industry for people to see and normalize it.”
Interview with CherryPicks, March 2024
“I hope my role in the movie shows the young deaf girl that they can do anything. I aspire for them to understand that deafness isn't the limit.”
Interview with CherryPicks, March 2024
“ASL itself requires face, body, and hands all in one. The way I present my acting is in ASL. As for emotion, I have merged ASL and feeling into acting.”
Interview with CherryPicks, March 2024
“I look up to a lot of people, but the one person I look up to, the few people I look up to mostly, are my parents and my sisters.”
Interview with The Associated Press, 2024
“I was never really interested in kaiju.”
On being cast in Godzilla vs. Kong, AsAmNews, March 2021

My daughter learned a few signs from that movie just from watching it with us. Small thing but it stuck.
