Kitty Drea

Kitty Drea, nee Lyng, was the former postmistress of Inistioge, County Kilkenny, a village on the River Nore where she served neighbours from behind the post office counter for around fifty years. She lived at The Square in Inistioge for the whole of her adult life and became one of the parish's most familiar and best-liked faces. In a small Irish village the post office is rarely only a place of stamps and pensions; under her care it was also a hub for news, kindness and steady daily service that knitted the community together through ordinary errands and quiet conversation.

She was the beloved wife of Jim Drea and mother of Seamus, Marguerite, Eamon, Pat, Michael and the late Matt. She was sister to Michael, Mary and John, grandmother to sixteen grandchildren, and surrounded in later years by daughters-in-law Roseanne, Geraldine, Sharon, Yvonne and Joan and son-in-law John. The Rower Inistioge GAA club publicly mourned her as the mother of its chairperson Michael, linking her private family life to the sporting heart of the locality and showing how widely her presence was felt beyond the counter and The Square.

Kitty passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, 19 September 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Death notices on rip.ie and in the Kilkenny People carried the family's words without naming a cause. Reposing was held at her daughter Marguerite's residence on Sunday, 20 September, with prayers in the evening. On Monday, 21 September, her funeral Mass was celebrated at St Colmcille's Church, Inistioge, followed by burial in Cappagh Cemetery. The parish streamed the Mass so neighbours farther afield could join in farewell and share condolences online.

Tributes stressed not a single headline achievement but the accumulated weight of half a century behind the counter: parcels, pensions, chat and care. Customers and neighbours recalled a gentle soul who made ordinary errands feel personal and who greeted the village as if each visit mattered. Inistioge remembered a woman who treated the post office as a place of welcome as much as of work. She is survived by Jim, her children and grandchildren, and by a village that still associates The Square with her quiet diligence, warm greeting and long fidelity to local life.
