Laura Marie Blad was the wife of Brian Blad, who served four terms as mayor of Pocatello, Idaho, from 2010 to 2026, and a familiar figure beside him throughout his sixteen years in office. A mother of four who went back to university after a thirty year break, she later worked at Idaho State University, where colleagues celebrated her warmth and positivity. She died on 18 October 2026, aged 56, after a six and a half year battle with cancer.
She was born in Taipei, Taiwan, on 8 August 1970. At three days old she was adopted by Kathy and Doug, an American couple stationed in Thailand with the United States Army. When she was two the family moved back to the United States, and she grew up between Texas, Utah and North Carolina, graduating from Northern Nash High School in North Carolina. She then went to Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, now Brigham Young University-Idaho, where she met Brian Blad.
The couple married in 1990 and settled in Pocatello, where they raised four children: Ben, Jade, Jordan and Bryson. Her family said the greatest joy of her life was being a mother, and that her home was filled with music, books and half finished crafts. All four children graduated from college. After watching three of them do so, she ended a thirty year hiatus from her own studies and returned to Idaho State University, earning her bachelor's degree in 2019. She then joined the university's staff, first as an administrator in the engineering department and later at the Alumni Center, workplaces she was remembered for filling with joy, laughter and 1980s music. The university marked her departure with a celebration at the Bengal Alumni Center in May 2026.
Brian Blad was elected mayor in 2009 and took office in January 2010. Laura Blad stood beside him through four terms, and through much of that time she was quietly living with stage four cancer. At his farewell ceremony in the City Council chambers on 8 January 2026, the departing mayor invited her to the front of the room and thanked her publicly. "We've been through a lot together, and I'm grateful for this woman right here, the best woman I've ever met in my life," he said.
She died on Sunday 18 October 2026, in her husband's arms and surrounded by her children, according to her obituary from Wilks Funeral Homes. Her death was reported by EastIdahoNews.com. She was survived by her husband, her mother, Kathy, her brother, Geoffrey, her four children and six grandchildren. A funeral was arranged for 23 October 2026 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Lakeview Drive in Pocatello, with burial in Pocatello and a celebration of her life at the Idaho State University Alumni Center. Her family described a life of quiet, persistent goodness and called her the brightest of lights.
