Lawrence Boyd IV was a 32 year old parking services employee for the city of Traverse City, Michigan, who became the subject of local and regional news coverage after he was shot and killed while working an overnight shift in a downtown parking structure. He was not a public figure before his death. He worked for the city's Parking Services department and was on duty on the night of Saturday, November 15, 2025, when he was fatally shot at the Larry C. Hardy Parking Deck on East State Street in downtown Traverse City.
His body was not found until the following morning, Sunday, November 16, when police responded to a report of a dead body in the 300 block of East State Street. Investigators connected his killing to a chaotic overnight crime spree in the same area, in which two teenagers were accused of breaking into parked cars and then fleeing from officers on foot. During that chase, one of the teenagers allegedly fired shots at police, and a round reportedly struck an officer's handcuff case before being stopped by the officer's ballistic vest. Boyd's shooting itself was captured on surveillance video, which became part of the case built against the suspects.
The case drew wide local attention in Traverse City, both because of the seeming randomness of Boyd's death, a man doing his job overnight in a parking garage, and because of the near miss involving the police officer during the same crime spree. Two teenagers, identified as Eugene Thompson, then 17, and Hunter Vanderwall, then 18, were arrested and charged in connection with the case. Over the following months, prosecutors expanded the case, and by the spring of 2026 a total of five people faced charges connected to Boyd's death and the surrounding events, including firearm possession charges and charges of providing false information to police.
Boyd was remembered by his community as an ordinary working man whose death on the job shook Traverse City. Before leaving for his shift the night he died, he had texted his girlfriend, Amanda Evans. In April 2026, the city marked National Workers Memorial Day by unveiling a memorial plaque in his honor at the State Street parking structure where he was killed, recognizing him as a worker who died on the job.
Boyd's death mattered to his community not because of prior fame but because of the manner of his killing, an apparently random act of violence tied to a wider crime spree, and because of the extended criminal case that followed, which continued to move through Michigan courts into 2026, including competency proceedings for one of the accused teenagers.
