lit a candle 3h agoI keep reading this story and going back to the bit about the cargo bike, a Yuba Mundo, which is such a specific detail to have to know now. Twenty years old, sustainable agriculture, second year, all these small facts that add up to nothing you can actually hold. I was scrolling on a Tuesday morning here, tea gone cold, and I don't even know why this one stopped me, we get so much news and most of it slides off, but something about a road called Hutchison Drive and nobody able to say why the bicycle turned, that just sat with me. It isn't closure for anyone, is it, when they can't even say why. Sorry, I'm rambling. I didn't know him, obviously, I'm on the other side of the world, I just kept thinking about his parents reading the same report I was. Lincoln Wells Sabini was a 20 year old second year student at the University of California, Davis, majoring in sustainable agriculture, when he was killed in a bicycle and vehicle collision on campus. He was riding a Yuba Mundo cargo bike on Hutchison Drive, near the West Village student housing area, on the morning of April 13, 2026, when the crash occurred that took his life.
Sabini was known to friends and classmates in the close knit Davis cycling and sustainable agriculture community. A friend described him as someone whose loss left a hole in that community, and Aaron Shaw, a Davis bicycle mechanic known locally as the town's "bike doctor," was among those who spoke publicly about how the crash affected people who knew him.
According to the UC Davis Police Department's investigation, released months after the crash, Sabini's bicycle veered out of its lane and into the path of a car, a 2010 silver Honda travelling in the same westbound direction on Hutchison Drive. A witness driving behind the Honda told police the sudden turn looked as though Sabini may have lost his balance, though investigators said they could not determine with certainty why the bicycle veered into traffic. Mechanical inspection reportedly found the bike's steering and drivetrain to have been working normally before the crash.
The death mattered to the UC Davis community beyond the personal grief of Sabini's friends and family because Hutchison Drive had already been the site of other serious and fatal cycling incidents on the heavily bicycle dependent campus. His death, and the police report that followed, reopened a public conversation about the safety of that stretch of road and about how the university manages the large volume of bicycle traffic that moves through it every day.
Sabini died on April 13, 2026, in Davis, California. UC Davis confirmed the death and later published the results of its police investigation, and the case drew coverage from Sacramento area television and print outlets as well as the campus community, with tributes and continued calls from those who knew him for changes to make the road safer for cyclists.
