Maarten Spanjer was a Dutch actor, television maker and writer, best known for playing the young motocross rider Hans in Paul Verhoeven's film Spetters (1980) and for Taxi, the hidden camera programme of the 1990s in which he chatted with unsuspecting passengers while disguised as a taxi driver. He died in the night of Friday 16 to Saturday 17 October 2026, aged 73.
He was born Martinus Raphaël Spanjer in Amsterdam on 24 October 1952 and grew up around the Retiefstraat in Amsterdam-Oost, in a Catholic family with eight children. Family holidays were spent in Spain, and as a boy he loved Ajax and the Italian actress Sophia Loren, memories he later gathered in his book Geluk is een herinnering. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he became known for the comic characters he played on the VARA football programme Voetbal '80, above all Drs. Vijfje, the football ombudsman, and for the character Beun de Haas in television advertising.
Spetters made him a film actor. In Verhoeven's film he played Hans, one of three young friends who fall for the snack bar owner Fientje, played by Renée Soutendijk. Television work followed in series such as De Fabriek, Laat maar zitten and Schoon goed. Younger viewers knew him as Gerben Zonderland in the first two Kameleon films, based on the children's books by Hotze de Roos, and in 2006 he played the detective Martin Boks in the police series Boks. He also made a series of advertisements for KPN with his good friend Rijk de Gooyer.
Taxi was first broadcast by NCRV on 19 July 1993. Spanjer was the driver for its first four seasons, and in the 1994 to 1995 season the programme drew an average of 2.7 million viewers. Its most famous ride took Rijk de Gooyer home from the Netherlands Film Festival, where he had just won a Golden Calf, which he threw out of the car window. In 1995 Taxi won a Golden Rose at the Montreux festival. Spanjer left the role when too many passengers began to recognise him.
He was also a writer, first in the satirical student weekly Propria Cures and later in more than ten books, among them Spanjer in stukken (2016), a collection of short stories and anecdotes. From 2018 he appeared as a storyteller in nostalgic music shows about the 1950s and 1960s. In 2025 he was diagnosed with bladder and prostate cancer and had an operation in which his bladder and prostate were removed. He kept his illness private until an interview with De Telegraaf in August 2026, after which he wrote a weekly column for the paper about life as a patient, often with a light touch. His partner Monique Waterham said his health declined rapidly in his last two weeks after new metastases appeared, and he died in a hospice in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel with her at his side.

In their own words
“Ik heb wat minder energie, maar dat past misschien ook wel bij mijn leeftijd. Ik kom ook weer onder de mensen.”
Maarten Spanjer to De Telegraaf, August 2026, after his cancer surgery (I have a bit less energy, but perhaps that suits my age too. I am getting out among people again.)
“Maar de gedachte 'waarom ik?' is bij mij taboe. 'Waarom ik níet?' kun je ook vragen.”
From Spanjer's first column about his illness in De Telegraaf, August 2026, as quoted by de Volkskrant (But the thought 'why me?' is taboo for me. You can also ask 'why not me?')
“Er waren ineens weer enorme, nieuwe uitzaaiingen met grote gevolgen. Hij kon ook niet meer, Maarten was op.”
His partner Monique Waterham to De Telegraaf, 17 October 2026 (Suddenly there were huge new metastases with serious consequences. He could not go on any more, Maarten was spent.)
