Maggie Smith won Oscars for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and California Suite and, decades later, became known to a new generation as Professor McGonagall and the Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey. She died at 89.

I met Maggie once, very briefly, and they were kind to a nervous stranger. That's what I'll remember.
