Mariusz Komenda was a Polish chef and restaurateur from Sroda Slaska in Lower Silesia who became known across Poland as a semi finalist on the eighth season of the TVN cooking show MasterChef in 2019. A self described "simple electrician" who had worked abroad, he turned a lifelong love of cooking into two restaurants in his home town, the last of which he opened with his son Mateusz. He died in the night of 6 to 7 October 2026, aged 44, nine months after being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour.
His love of food began at home. He told the local paper Roland Gazeta that his mother, Teresa, would call him into the kitchen to taste what she was making, and that every Christmas Eve she relied on his palate to check the traditional dishes. At the age of ten he made his first dish on his own, a heart shaped cake layered with whipped cream for Mother's Day. He said it was not perfect, but that it made him realise cooking was his passion. He particularly loved preparing fish and seafood.
Before television, Komenda worked as an electrician and spent time working outside Poland, including in Switzerland. He said the idea of applying to MasterChef came while he was living there: he cooked a traditional Polish meal for friends, and they liked it so much they asked to take the leftovers home. A few days later he saw a casting call for the eighth edition of the show, sent in an application, attended pre castings in Krakow with his family and his older son Mateusz cheering him on, and was chosen as one of the 40 amateur cooks who would compete for the MasterChef apron. He was 37 when the season began on TVN in September 2019.
Over the autumn of 2019 he progressed episode by episode. In the eleventh episode, built around foraged forest ingredients and molecular gastronomy, he served a smoked pumpernickel tartare wreathed in liquid nitrogen that he said looked like morning mist in a forest, and then won his place in the final five by cooking five dishes from broad beans. The semi finalists flew to Mexico, where they visited restaurants on the Yucatan Peninsula and cooked for 50 people in Izamal. In the extreme heat Komenda felt unwell, left the set several times and, after consulting the doctor on set, withdrew from the challenge without serving his dish, which meant leaving the show. Some viewers criticised the production, but he wrote on Instagram that he was very happy with his time on the programme, had fulfilled his greatest dream, knew what conditions to expect and blamed no one. He called Mexico the greatest adventure of his life.
After the show he kept his connection to MasterChef. In 2020 he returned as a guest during filming of the ninth edition, helping contestants at the grill, and Roland Gazeta reported that he later came back several times, including in the role of a juror. He stayed close to fellow contestants, especially Grzegorz Zawierucha, with whom he had shared a room.
In August 2020 he opened Sztuka Restaurant in the district alternative culture centre in Sroda Slaska, at ul. Przyszkolna 3, with a seasonal menu that changed every two weeks and dishes from the restaurant's own smokehouse. "Cooking is an art," he told Roland Gazeta. The restaurant opened just before the pandemic restrictions of late 2020, and he adapted with takeaway dishes, plated home deliveries and small cooking workshops. In 2021 an interview he gave about delays over the restaurant's alcohol licence drew a formal press law correction from the town authorities, who disputed his account. He ran Sztuka until 2023.
His dream had always been to cook alongside his son, who trained at a catering technical school in Wroclaw and did an internship in Sztuka's kitchen. On 23 April 2025 the two opened Father and Son (styled father&son the art of Mexican food) on Plac Wolnosci 25 in the centre of Sroda Slaska, serving mainly Mexican dishes alongside Polish ones, a cuisine he had fallen for during the MasterChef trip. He was also a familiar face at local events, sitting on the jury of cooking contests, cooking for residents and joining charity initiatives, including a tasting dinner he prepared for winners of a Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity auction organised by its Zurich team. For many people in the town he was simply "our MasterChef."
In January 2026, after being admitted to hospital with a suspected stroke, he was diagnosed with a tumour of the right thalamus with the radiological features of a malignant glioma. He had two complex operations in Warsaw in quick succession: in the first, surgeons removed the tumour and the surgical site was treated with radiotherapy; in the second, part of his skull bone was removed. He went through neurorehabilitation, and further diagnostics found new disease foci unrelated to the glioma, investigated in Legnica and Wroclaw. On 12 March 2026 he shared the diagnosis publicly on Facebook, writing that it sounded like "a very poor title for a science fiction film." Fundraisers were set up on zrzutka.pl and Siepomaga.pl, and residents, friends and local organisations held charity events, including a charity boxing sparring event, Glory Boks Sroda Slaska. He wrote that his wife, family, friends and supporters kept him from giving up even for a moment. In September 2026 his son announced that Father and Son had closed.
Komenda died in the night of 6 to 7 October 2026, as confirmed to Fakt by the Sroda Slaska county head, Sebastian Burdzy. The news was first reported by Roland Gazeta on 7 October. MasterChef's official account wrote that Mariusz had been part of the MasterChef family and would be remembered as a man full of passion, energy and love of cooking, and Sroda Slaska county said it would miss him greatly. His death was later reported internationally by People, TMZ, E! News and Page Six. He is survived by his wife Agnieszka, his son Mateusz and his wider family.
