Martin F. McDonald III was an American engineer, environmental scientist and civic volunteer who spent much of his life on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, after a long career with a major aerospace and defense company. He was born around 1935 or 1936 and grew up between Watertown, Connecticut and Eastham, Massachusetts, the son of A. Francis McDonald and Emma Taylor McDonald. He died on September 6, 2026, at the age of 90.

McDonald was educated at The Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut, and went on to study at Brown University, the University of Maine and the University of Rhode Island, where he earned degrees in engineering and environmental sciences. He built his career at Raytheon Technologies in Philadelphia, where he rose to become the department head of environmental studies before retiring at age 60.

After retiring, McDonald and his wife, Susan, settled permanently in Eastham on Cape Cod, a place he had known since childhood. There he became known less for his professional background than for the full and active retirement he built for himself and his community. He fished, dug for clams and oysters, golfed, played tennis, kept up a weekly poker game, went antiquing and hunted for bargains at yard sales. He was rarely without one of his labrador retrievers, including two dogs named Belle and Chester who became a familiar part of his outdoor routine.

McDonald was also a civic figure in Eastham. He served as an elected Selectman for the town and sat on its conservation and town planning committees, work that reflected the environmental training from his career. He was said to be particularly proud of his role in bringing a public water system and solar energy to the town, projects that had a lasting effect on the community he had chosen to call home.

Martin F. McDonald III died on September 6, 2026, at the age of 90. No cause of death has been made public. His death was reported through a funeral home obituary rather than through national news coverage, reflecting his standing as a respected local figure and family man rather than a nationally prominent public figure. He is remembered by those who knew him as a devoted outdoorsman, a public servant to his town, and a steady presence at the poker table, on the water and in the garden of his adopted home on Cape Cod.

My family rented a cottage in Eastham every August when I was a kid, and my dad always said the town got its water lines because of a guy on the board of selectmen who wouldn't let it go. Didn't know his name until today. 90 years old. That's a full life on that stretch of Cape Cod.

Martin F. McDonald III died on September 6, 2026, at the age of 90. His death was announced through an obituary placed by his family with a funeral home serving Eastham, Massachusetts, where he had lived for decades. No cause of death has been disclosed, and no location such as a hospital or hospice has been specified in public reporting.

Because McDonald was primarily known within his own community rather than as a national public figure, tributes so far have come mainly through the obituary itself and through the condolences left by friends, neighbors and former colleagues on the funeral home's guestbook, rather than through statements from public officials or national media. The obituary describes a man who was deeply attached to Cape Cod, remembered for his fishing, clamming and oystering, his golf and tennis games, his weekly poker night, and the companionship of his labrador retrievers.

No public memorial service, funeral date or resting place has been reported as of this writing. If a service or memorial gathering is announced, it is expected to be held in or near Eastham, Massachusetts, where McDonald spent his retirement and where he served the town as a Selectman.
