Meta Grosman was a Slovenian anglist, literary historian and professor of English and American literature at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana. She was born in Ljubljana on 18 May 1936 and died in the same city on 11 October 2026 at the age of 90. Her research centred on reading, literary reception, the teaching of literature and translation theory, and she was long associated with the Slovenian Reading Association as an active leader and later honorary president.
She finished the Classical Gymnasium in Ljubljana and graduated from the Faculty of Arts in 1960 in English and German. She continued her studies at the University of Cambridge, then in London (1963 to 1964) and in the United States, earning a master's degree at Miami University in Ohio in 1965. In 1971 she completed a doctorate at the University of Ljubljana on the reader as a category in English literary criticism between 1921 and 1961. She became a full professor of English and American literature in Ljubljana, taught the modern English novel and Anglo-American literary theory and criticism, and in 1987-88 was a Fulbright visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
For nearly a decade she headed the Department of English, hiring key staff and strengthening chairs in linguistics and English teaching. Colleagues credited her with shifting teaching toward student centred lectures, seminars and tutorials. She helped establish the Department of Translation and Interpreting, founded the Slovene Association for the Study of English in 1993 and served as its first president, and from 1995 led the Slovenian Reading Association. She sat on the FILLM committee from 1996 and was its vice president from 2002 to 2006. Her books include Zagovor branja (In Defence of Reading) and Razseznost branja (on reading literacy). She received the IBBY Slovenia award in 2011 for promoting youth literature and reading, and the University of Ljubljana named her an emerita professor. She was a granddaughter of film pioneer Karol Grossmann. After her death, Slovenian media recalled her insistence that the mother tongue remains of special importance even in a multilingual reading culture.

In their own words
“If primary and secondary pupils read more English books, that is not a bad thing. In the future more and more people will read in several languages. But if they think English is cool and Slovenian is worthless, they themselves are the poorest ones. For every person the language into which they are born, the mother tongue, is of special and greatest importance.”
