Michael Garr

Michael Garr died on the night of April 21, 2023, on the 200 block of Bridge Street in Drexel Hill, a neighborhood within Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania. He was fifteen years old and <cite index="10-4">a 10th grade student at Upper Darby High School</cite>. <cite index="6-4">Around 9:30 p.m., he was found bleeding from a stab wound to the chest</cite>, and <cite index="6-5,6-6,6-7">a neighbor said she heard a man screaming for help and was told that Garr had been banging on his car, bleeding; neighbors and responding medics tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene</cite>. One local radio report described him as <cite index="11-1">fatally stabbed in the neck</cite>, though the account presented at trial pointed to a chest wound.

<cite index="10-5">Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt called the killing "a horrific act, a senseless act"</cite>, and Delaware County's district attorney at the time, Jack Stollsteimer, said <cite index="1-4,1-5,1-6">Garr was minding his own business when he was murdered, that he was a juvenile doing nothing more than any juvenile should be able to do anywhere in America, just walking down the street in his own neighborhood, and that he was stabbed and killed at random</cite>. <cite index="10-6">Garr's uncle, Mike Peabody, read a prepared statement on behalf of the family</cite>, saying <cite index="4-5">the family was "completely devastated by the loss of Michael Jr."</cite>

In the days after his death, <cite index="12-4">people continued showing up at the corner where the crime occurred to pay their respects and add to a growing memorial in Garr's honor</cite>, and <cite index="12-5,12-6">the owner of a nearby cafe helped raise more than three thousand dollars for the family</cite>. Investigators spent months reviewing surveillance footage before identifying a suspect. In May 2023, <cite index="2-1,2-2,2-3,2-4">Marson Weh, 24, of Clifton Heights, was taken into custody, refused to cooperate with police, and was extradited to Ohio, where he pleaded guilty to unrelated assault and stolen vehicle charges and was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison</cite>. <cite index="4-7,4-8">Evidence collected at his arrest, including a pair of blood-stained pants, was sent to the Philadelphia Crime Lab, which in December 2023 confirmed the blood matched Michael Garr's DNA</cite>, and he was charged with first degree murder in connection with Garr's death, along with <cite index="5-2">attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery and related offenses for allegedly stabbing a pregnant woman carrying a child in a Secane carjacking on February 7, 2023</cite>.

The case moved slowly through the courts after Weh was found incompetent to stand trial for a period. His murder trial finally opened in Delaware County in September 2026, more than three years after Garr's death, with prosecutors telling jurors that <cite index="8-1">Weh had "no earthly connection" to Michael Garr</cite> and that the killing was, as prosecutor Tanner Rouse put it, <cite index="9-5,9-6">a wrong place, wrong time encounter and the kind of crime that people need to pretend does not happen</cite>. On September 24, 2026, <cite index="6-1">a jury found Marson Weh guilty of stabbing 15-year-old Michael Garr to death</cite>. During the trial, <cite index="9-1">Garr's father, Michael, told reporters, "Three and a half years, and it's been hell"</cite>. Details of any funeral or memorial service held for Garr in 2023 were not made public.
