Milton Abell

Milton Abell was a golf professional and turfgrass expert from Georgia who spent more than four decades working at country clubs and golf courses across the state, shaping the playing surfaces and operations that generations of Georgia golfers relied on. He died on September 9, 2026, at his home in Watkinsville, Georgia, at the age of 75.

Abell was born on June 18, 1951, in Columbus, Georgia, and grew up in Fitzgerald, where he was a multi-sport athlete at Fitzgerald High School, lettering in football, basketball, baseball, track and wrestling. He carried that love of sport and the outdoors into adulthood, studying at South Georgia Junior College before earning a horticulture degree with a specialization in turf management from the University of Georgia in 1975.

That education set him on a career path in the golf industry that spanned golf professional, golf course superintendent, director of golf, and golf operations and marketing roles at courses including Green Hills Country Club, Canterbury Golf Club, the University of Georgia Golf Course, and Jennings Mill Country Club. Though he was not a nationally famous tournament player, within Georgia's golf and turfgrass community he was known and respected as someone who built a career around caring for courses and running clubs, work that touched countless amateur golfers who never knew his name but played on grounds he tended or managed.

His family has said that whatever satisfaction his professional life brought him, it was secondary to his family life. He was married to Twinkle Starr Abell for 54 years, and those who announced his death, Lord and Stephens Funeral Home West in Watkinsville, described a man whose devotion to his wife, children and grandchildren defined him as much as his decades in golf.
