Napoleon Meskhia, known as Napo, was a Georgian neurosurgeon, medical scientist and politician from Abkhazia. He built the first neurosurgical service in the Abkhaz Autonomous Republic, created a republican neurosurgical centre in Sukhumi that had the first computed tomography scanner in Georgia, and later served as a member and deputy chairman of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia. He died in Tbilisi on 21 October 2026, aged 88.
He was born on 28 May 1938 in the village of Otobaia in the Gali district of Abkhazia. After leaving secondary school he worked in a coal mine in Tkvarcheli before studying medicine. He graduated from the medical faculty of the Tbilisi State Medical Institute in 1964 and began working as a surgeon in Tkvarcheli and Gali.
In 1966 he went to Moscow to continue his training at the N. Burdenko Institute of Neurosurgery, where he completed his clinical residency and postgraduate studies, defended his candidate dissertation and, in 1976, his doctoral thesis. He returned to Georgia in 1978. At the end of the 1970s, on his initiative, a neurosurgical department was opened in Abkhazia, and he led it for many years. In 1987 a neurosurgical building was added to the Abkhaz Republican Hospital in Sukhumi, and the republic's neurosurgical centre was formed with him as director. According to the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia, he was the first in Georgia to operate successfully on arterial and arteriovenous aneurysms of the brain, and his centre carried out operations on brain and spinal tumours, head injuries and vascular disease to international standards. He introduced a number of new surgical methods and was the author of several inventions and many scientific papers. He also founded the charitable medical association Gulmotskaleba (Mercy) in Abkhazia and served as its president.
In 1991 he was elected a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Abkhaz Autonomous Republic. After the war of 1992 to 1993 and the displacement of Georgians from Abkhazia, he continued to serve on the council in exile, rising to deputy chairman. In 1999 he received the Order of Honour for his contribution to protecting public health and to the evacuation and medical care of people displaced from Abkhazia. In 2009 he published How Abkhazia Was Alienated, a book on the causes of the conflict, and in 2023 the Georgian National Academy of Sciences awarded him an honorary diploma for his scientific achievements in medicine.
The Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia announced his death and expressed its condolences to his family. A funeral was set for 25 October 2026 from the Church of St Nino in Tbilisi, with burial in the Makhata Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures. The cause of death was not made public.
