Netinho, born Ernesto de Souza Andrade Júnior, was a Brazilian singer, songwriter and Carnival bandleader who became one of the defining voices of axé music. Fronting Banda Beijo and then a long solo career, he gave Brazil hits such as "Beijo na Boca", "Menina", "Pra Te Ter Aqui" and "Milla", the 1996 anthem that broke radio play records and was recorded in several languages. He died on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, in Salvador, Bahia, at the age of 60.

He was born on July 12, 1966, in Santo Antônio de Jesus, in the interior of Bahia. His father died in a car accident when he was nine, and the following year the family moved to Salvador. His mother gave him his first guitar at 14, and he taught himself to play. While studying civil engineering at the Catholic University of Salvador he began performing bossa nova and Brazilian popular music in schools, theatres and bars.

Carnival changed his path. After following the Bloco Beijo as a reveller, he auditioned to replace Luiz Caldas as its singer and made his debut on Salvador's official Carnival circuit with Banda Beijo in 1988. "Beijo na Boca" became a national hit that year, and the band was among the first axé acts on the TV Globo show Domingão do Faustão. In 1990 he took the band's trio elétrico to the FIFA World Cup in Italy, playing for Brazilian fans before and after matches.

He went solo in the early 1990s. His first solo album, Um Beijo pra Você (1993), went platinum in Brazil and gold in Chile, and "Menina" became a theme in the soap opera Tropicaliente. The live album Netinho ao Vivo! (1996) introduced "Milla" and sold more than a million copies. Over the following years his songs were heard in Globo productions including Corpo Dourado, Malhação and Terra Nostra. In 1998 he relaunched Banda Beijo with the singer Gilmelândia, and in 2000 he took a trio elétrico to Lisbon for a Carnival marking 500 years of Brazil. His 2008 album Minha Praia earned a Latin Grammy nomination.

His later life was marked by serious illness. In 2013 he suffered a series of strokes, underwent brain surgery and spent months in hospital, temporarily losing his voice, movement and memory, and he later spoke openly about the depression that followed. He returned to the stage and in his final years recorded songs about faith and hope. A conservative and supporter of Jair Bolsonaro, he ran unsuccessfully for federal deputy for Bahia in 2022, and some of his public statements drew strong criticism.

In March 2025 he was diagnosed with an aggressive type B non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He shared his treatment with fans, returned to performing, and announced in 2026 that the cancer had come back. He died at Hospital Aliança Star in Salvador after the disease progressed to kidney failure and multiple organ dysfunction. His team said he "left peacefully" and often said in his last months that he had lived a happy life. He was survived by his daughter, Bruna. In keeping with his wishes, his wake and cremation were held privately for family and close friends.

60. Heard Milla on a bus in Rio years ago and never forgot it. Thinking of his daughter Bruna and the family.

In 1998 he relaunched Banda Beijo with Gilmelândia, and he toured Portugal, Europe and the United States, staging a Carnival for 80,000 people in Lisbon in 2000 to mark 500 years of Brazil.

After a break in the early 2000s he returned with the album Outra Versão (2005) and his first DVD, recorded in 2006 at the Concha Acústica of the Teatro Castro Alves with guests including Ivete Sangalo and Ilê Aiyê. Minha Praia (2008) was nominated for a Latin Grammy, and in 2009 he marked 20 years of his career with the DVD Netinho e a Caixa Mágica, recorded in Aracaju.
