Nevzat Doğansoy, known by his stage name Nev, was a Turkish singer, composer and lyricist who rose to fame in the early 2000s with the hit "Zor". Over a career of more than two decades he released six albums, wrote nearly all of his own songs and later won wide praise for reworking classical Turkish art music in a pop-rock style.
Born in Istanbul on 24 December 1968, he began playing music on the mandolin as a child. He took up the electric guitar in his second year at university and was performing on stage within five months, spending his summers playing at holiday resorts on the southern coast while studying business at Istanbul University. After graduating he worked as a product manager for sportswear brands including Adidas and Slazenger, but kept performing, and in 1995 he played at Istanbul's Cool Bar with the group Chantage.
In 2000 he joined the rock singer Teoman on a tour of Turkey before releasing his debut album, Her Şeye Rağmen, in 2001. Every song and lyric on it was his own, and the single "Zor" became one of the defining Turkish hits of the period. The albums Sen Gibi (2004) and Işığım ve Gölgem (2007) followed, with songs such as "Sen Gibi", "Mühürlü Kaderim" and "Benmişim". In 2007 students at 13 Turkish universities voted him best male singer, and he went on to give around 400 concerts across the country.
His 2010 album Bir Nev-i Alaturka set classics of Turkish art music, by composers such as Kemani Serkis Efendi, Dede Efendi and Yıldırım Gürses, to rock, tango, Latin and rebetiko arrangements. It earned him the award for best Turkish art music male soloist at the 38th Golden Butterfly Awards in 2011. He later released Kıyısız Deniz (2014) and Bir Nev-i Alaturka 2 (2016).
Nev was taken to hospital on 3 September 2026 after losing consciousness and spent the following weeks in intensive care, where he was intubated twice. He died of liver failure at Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital in Istanbul on 24 October 2026, aged 57. His manager and friend İlker Ercan announced his death, and fellow musicians paid tribute to a singer who, they said, had left too early with many songs still to sing.
