My daughter had Lord of the Dance on VHS and we must have watched Saoirse's part a hundred times in our living room back in the 90s. 52 is no age at all.

Niamh O'Brien, known after her marriage as Niamh Flatley, was an Irish dancer from Kilbride, County Meath, who danced in the original Riverdance line-up at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994 and went on to perform the lead female role of Saoirse in Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance. She later married Flatley, and for two decades she was his partner in life and, behind the scenes, in the touring shows that carried Irish dance around the world.
She began Irish dancing at the age of three and competed at an elite level throughout her teenage years, finishing fourth at the world championships when she was 17. She then left competition for professional stage work, at the moment Irish dance was about to become an international phenomenon.
O'Brien was part of the Riverdance troupe that performed during the interval of the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin, the performance that launched the show, and it was on Riverdance that she first met Flatley. She went on to dance in Flatley's own productions, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger, taking the lead role of Saoirse in Lord of the Dance, the Irish dancing heroine at the centre of its story of good against evil.
She married Flatley in October 2006 at St Patrick's Church in Fermoy, County Cork, close to Castlehyde, the historic house Flatley had bought and restored. Their son, Michael St James, was born in 2007. When Flatley was diagnosed with cancer around Christmas 2022, he later recalled that she hugged him and that everything seemed a little better. Reports at the time of her death said that she herself had suffered serious ill health for a number of years, yet remained closely involved in the running of the touring show, working directly with costume designers, dancers and suppliers.
Niamh O'Brien died peacefully at the Beacon Hospital in south Dublin on 5 October 2026, aged 52, following a period of illness. The specific cause was not made public; reports said she had been only hours away from being flown to the United States for specialist treatment. Announcing her death, Flatley wrote: "My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend." The Flatley and O'Brien families asked for privacy and thanked the hospital staff who had cared for her over her final weeks. Funeral arrangements were to be announced in due course.
