My dad had Jack on a tape, we must've watched it a dozen summers in the garage. 1977, and I didn't even know his name until today.

Örjan Ramberg was a Swedish actor who spent more than four decades with the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, known as Dramaten, appearing in more than 80 of its productions and working with directors including Ingmar Bergman and John Caird. He won the Guldmasken award for best actor for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Dramaten called him a large part of its modern history. His later years were overshadowed by the controversy over his treatment of a former partner, the singer Josefin Nilsson, which ended his time at the theatre in 2019.
He was born Ralf Örjan Valter Rahmberg on 26 February 1948 in Örgryte, Gothenburg, and grew up in Högsbo. He first hoped for a career in pop music, sang with the band Que and in 1967 stood in for the singer of Tages on a summer tour. In 1969 his single Balladen om killen, produced by Göran Lagerberg, reached number 13 on the Swedish chart Tio i Topp. In the early 1970s he appeared in the first Swedish productions of Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar, in which he played Herod, before training at the theatre school in Malmö from 1974 to 1977.
Ramberg joined Dramaten in 1977, the same year he made his film debut in the cult film Jack. On its stages he played the Master in Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, Johansson in Bergman's staging of Strindberg's The Ghost Sonata, Edgar in The Dance of Death, Claudius in Hamlet and Prospero in The Tempest, as well as leading roles in plays by Lars Norén. On screen he was the photographer Harry Friberg in three Stieg Trenter films for Swedish television in 1987 and the editor Schyman in the thriller Sprängaren in 2001. He received the Eugene O'Neill award in 2001 and the royal medal Litteris et Artibus in 2009.
He had three children: the actress Tilde Fröling, with Ewa Fröling, a son with Lena Olin and a son with Lena Nilsson. In the 1990s he lived with Josefin Nilsson. A 2019 SVT documentary about her described physical and psychological abuse by a partner who had been convicted for it. Ramberg was not named but was widely identified, protests followed, and his work at Dramaten ended in March 2019. He later wrote publicly asking how long he would be punished for his crime, and he took legal action against SVT.
Ramberg died on Friday 14 August 2026 at Ersta Hospice in Stockholm, aged 78. His daughter Tilde Fröling announced his death, saying that she and her brother George had been at his side. No cause of death was made public. Dramaten said it was impossible to forget the controversies around him but that his long line of great performances was beyond doubt.
