Padre Elísio Dias was a Portuguese Catholic priest who served as parish priest of Quarteira, on the Algarve coast, for 46 years, from 1968 to 2014. Over that time the fishing town grew into a major resort beside Vilamoura, and he built the churches and social services its growing population needed. He died on 19 October 2026, aged 95.
He was born on 17 December 1930 in the parish of São Mamede de Vermil, in the municipality of Guimarães in northern Portugal. After a period of discernment with the Congregation of the Divine Word, he entered the seminary in Almada at the age of 25, together with Joaquim Correia, and both went on to serve the Diocese of the Algarve. He completed his theology studies at the Seminário dos Olivais in Lisbon.
He was ordained a priest in Faro Cathedral by Bishop Júlio Tavares Rebimbas on 30 July 1967, and on 7 October that year he was appointed assistant parish priest of Portimão. On 15 September 1968 he took charge of the parish of Quarteira, which he led until 19 September 2014. He oversaw the remodelling and enlargement of the parish church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the building of the church of Nossa Senhora da Alegria in Vilamoura, the church of Nossa Senhora de Fátima in Pereiras, and the church of São Pedro do Mar with its pastoral complex, described by the diocese as one of the largest churches in the Algarve.
He also founded the Centro Paroquial de Quarteira, whose services for children, older people, families and people in poverty reach Quarteira and the neighbouring areas of Almancil and Loulé. Loulé council credited him with helping to create a home for the elderly and a social canteen, and with being one of the driving forces behind Quarteira's Marchas Populares in the 1970s. He was chaplain to the Carmelite convent at Patacão, a member of the diocese's Presbyteral Council and College of Consultors, and vicar of the former deanery of Loulé and São Brás de Alportel. In 1997 Loulé council awarded him its Municipal Medal of Merit in gold, and in January 2006 parishioners named a street near São Pedro do Mar after him.
He retired in 2014 and spent his last years in a care home near his native parish. His death on the morning of 19 October 2026 was announced by the Diocese of the Algarve, whose bishop, Vitorino Soares, remembered him as a great builder of bridges between the Church, civil society and the tourism developers who shaped Quarteira and Vilamoura from the 1960s. Loulé's mayor, Telmo Pinto, said he had been far more than a spiritual guide to generations of the town. His funeral Mass was held on 21 October 2026 at São Mamede de Vermil, where he was buried.

In their own words
“Over several decades, Father Elísio Dias was much more than a spiritual guide. He was a man of faith, of causes and of action, whose dedication to others, social sensitivity and spirit of solidarity left a deep mark on successive generations of Quarteira's people.”
Telmo Pinto, mayor of Loulé, 19 October 2026 (translated from Portuguese)
