Pasquale Formisano

Pasquale Formisano was an Italian shipping executive who was among the earliest members of the team that built the Mediterranean Shipping Company, known worldwide simply as MSC, into one of the largest container shipping and cruise groups on the planet. He died on 21 September 2026. His age, place of death and cause of death have not been made public.

Formisano's association with MSC dated back to the company's earliest days. <cite index="1-2">As one of the shipping company's pioneers, Formisano was part of the team working alongside the owner and founder, Captain Gianluigi Aponte, during MSC's early years in Brussels.</cite> MSC Belgium's chief executive, Marc Beerlandt, recalled that <cite index="1-5">Pasquale escorted the first MSC vessel to call at Antwerp, visited numerous Antwerp freight forwarding clients and was a familiar figure at the Port House.</cite>

Over the following decades Formisano's career tracked the expansion of MSC itself. Spanish trade press reported that he became one of the most recognised and respected figures in the shipping industry, according to the company. In later years he held the title of Senior Vice President and headed MSC's trade lane between Europe and North America, drawing on more than four decades of experience in container shipping and sitting on the board of MSC's United States operations, according to a company biography document. Beerlandt described <cite index="1-6">his negotiating skills, business acumen, Neapolitan sprezzatura and legendary outspokenness as having made him unique,</cite> using a term that <cite index="1-7">is an Italian concept from the Renaissance that can be described as studied nonchalance or effortless grace.</cite>

News of Formisano's death was announced by MSC itself rather than by his family. <cite index="1-1,1-3">MSC Belgium said it was deeply saddened to announce the passing of Captain Pasquale Formisano.</cite> Beerlandt called him <cite index="1-4">one of the pioneers and founding fathers of MSC,</cite> and said <cite index="1-8">he and the entire MSC world would miss him dearly.</cite> Spanish and Italian shipping trade press, including Diario del Puerto and Blue Economy, followed with their own tributes describing him as one of the figures of MSC's first generation.
