For John Soyoye · 10d ago
My mother called me about this before I'd even seen it on the news myself. I don't know much about who John Soyoye was, only what's come out of Moston this week, and that's an uneasy way to learn someone's name for the first time.
For Venerable Myeongjin · 17d ago
I keep coming back to this, probably because I saw a segment years ago, I think it was a documentary about Seoul, maybe a news magazine piece, that showed monks at a protest and one older man speaking with such calm authority that even the narrator paused on him. I did not know his name then. I only learned it was Venerable Myeongjin reading the notice of his death this week, and then reading that the Jogye Order plans to give him their highest rank after the fact, which strikes me as the kind of thing institutions do when they finally run out of reasons not to. I have no religious stake in any of this, I am not Buddhist, I only ever watched from a very great distance, a man in Virginia with a television on, but there was something in that footage, the stillness of him in a crowd that was not still at all, that has stayed with me longer than it probably should have. Edit: I looked it up again, it was Bongeunsa he led, not the temple I first assumed.

72 is no age at all. Delaware lost a legislator who actually moved the needle on domestic violence policy, and my thoughts go to her husband Michael and the children at this time.
For Sidney Offit · 20d ago
I keep trying to think when I first saw him, and I believe it was one of those nights flipping channels in the late seventies, my father had WNEW on, and there was Offit against Abend going back and forth on something, I don't even remember what the topic was now, only that it felt like watching two people actually think instead of perform. Point and counterpoint, that whole format, and everyone forgets he was half of where it started before Crossfire and before Saturday Night Live did their bit on it. Ninety seven years old. I suppose what strikes me, editing this thought as I go, is that the debates were only ten years of a very long life, and somehow the ones I remember best are a decade out of ninety seven, which seems to say something about television, or maybe just about memory.

Federal Minister for Law and Justice, January to May 1988 cabinet reshuffle era, 2018 in his case. A narrow window, but a real one in the Abbasi government.
For Pasquale Formisano · 21 Sept 2026
First heard the name Formisano in a Journal of Commerce piece my father kept from the eighties, back when he was still forwarding freight out of Newport News. Forty plus years in this business and he was still Senior Vice President when I read the notice this morning.
For Dan Brown · 17 Sept 2026
Just re-read The Da Vinci Code with my students last spring and watched him talk about writing habits on TV a few months back. Hard to process this.
For Eric Zahnd · 17 Sept 2026
24 years in that office. That's rare.
For Ron Hurst · 17 Sept 2026
Told my dad this morning and he just went quiet for a second, said he remembered Hurst's name from a hockey card he had as a kid in the 50s. 95 years old. Didn't know much about him myself beyond that but it clearly meant something to my dad.
For Ilfinesh Qannoo · 8 Sept 2026
The epitaph is fitting. She understood that culture and politics cannot be separated. Her work was both, seamlessly. A rare artist.
For Bello Mandiya · 7 Sept 2026
Senator Mandiya's tenure on the Water Resources Committee addressed infrastructure deficits that many overlook. His pragmatism in prioritizing completed projects over dispersed funding was sound governance.
For Kirk Douglas · 5 Sept 2026
His insistence that Dalton Trumbo receive credit on Spartacus remains a defining moment in American cinema. The principled exercise of power for artistic and moral truth. His legacy extends far beyond the screen.
For William G. Anderson · 1 Sept 2026
Dr. Anderson's tenure as AOA president represented a watershed moment for the osteopathic profession. His subsequent advocacy for minority scholarships reshaped medical education in ways we are still measuring.
For Chuck Norris · 6 May 2026
His transition from competitive martial arts to film demonstrated a rare capacity for reinvention. The Way of the Dragon remains essential cinema.
