Marta Gastón Menal was a Spanish economist and Socialist politician from Huesca who served as Aragon's regional minister for the economy and employment for eight years, from 2015 to 2023, under president Javier Lambán.

She was born in Huesca on 2 February 1973 and graduated in economics and business studies from the University of Zaragoza. Before entering full time politics she worked at the savings bank Ibercaja as a business account manager.

Her public career began in the Cortes Generales. Elected senator for Huesca for the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in 2004, she served until 2008 as deputy spokesperson of the Socialist group and vice spokesperson on the economy and finance committee. From 2008 to 2011 she sat in the Congress of Deputies for Huesca, where she was the Socialist spokesperson on the economy and finance committee as the financial crisis broke. Between 2007 and 2011 she was also a Huesca city councillor responsible for finance and participatory budgeting.

In July 2015 Lambán appointed her minister for the economy, industry and employment, and in August 2019 she continued in his second coalition government as minister for the economy, planning and employment. In 2016 her department pushed through a decree law that unblocked wind farm projects stalled for years by court disputes, opening the way to a surge in renewable energy investment. Her department also handled the recovery after the financial crisis and, from 2020, the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on businesses and jobs. Her years in office also saw the arrival of the bonÀrea food complex in Épila, Amazon's logistics operations and the Amazon Web Services data centres. She chaired the regional public business corporation and the boards of companies including Aramón, MotorLand and Aragón Exterior.

After the PSOE left government in 2023 she was elected to the Cortes de Aragón as number two on the party list, but the cancer she had been diagnosed with forced her to leave her seat early.

Marta Gastón died on 3 November 2026, aged 53. PSOE Aragón leader Pilar Alegría called her a tireless, tenacious woman open to dialogue, and Aragon's president Jorge Azcón paid tribute to a public servant known for her great capacity for work.

I only knew the name because of a piece I read, I think on one of the trade sites, about the Amazon data centres going into Aragon, and I remember thinking at the time, who approved this, who pushed it through at the ministry level, and it was her name that kept coming up, Marta Gaston, the economy minister. I never followed Spanish regional politics closely, I'll admit that, my interest is really television and science programming, but there was something about a 2016 wind energy decree mentioned in the same article that stuck with me, the idea that one person's paperwork, essentially, reshapes a whole region's power grid years later. Fifty three. Edit: I looked it up again, Huesca, not Zaragoza, I had it wrong the first time.

In the 2008 general election she moved to the Congress of Deputies as second on the Socialist list for Huesca, and served until 2011 as her group's spokesperson on the economy and finance committee during the financial crisis.

In July 2015 Javier Lambán made her minister for the economy, industry and employment of the Government of Aragon. In August 2019, in his second government formed by PSOE, Podemos, CHA and PAR, she became minister for the economy, planning and employment, with industry passing to the Aragonese Party. A decree law promoted by her department in August 2016 unblocked wind farm projects that had been stalled for nearly five years by legal disputes, with investment initially estimated at around 2 billion euros. During her time in office Aragon attracted the bonÀrea agri food complex in Épila, Amazon logistics and the Amazon Web Services data centres, and her department handled the recovery after the financial crisis and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic from 2020. She also chaired the Corporación Empresarial Pública de Aragón and the boards of public companies including Aramón, MotorLand, Aragón Exterior, Expo Zaragoza Empresarial, Walqa and the Aragonese logistics platforms.

After the 2023 regional election, in which she stood as number two on the PSOE list, she became a Socialist member of the Cortes de Aragón in opposition, again working on economic and business policy.
