Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk, also written Mehmood Bashir Virk, was a Pakistani politician from Gujranwala who served five terms in the National Assembly and briefly as federal Minister for Law and Justice. He died in Lahore on 11 September 2026 at the age of 88, according to his Wikipedia biography, after a prolonged illness. Several Pakistani outlets described him as 89.
Born on 25 December 1937, he spent nearly three decades in and out of parliament as a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart. Voters first sent him to the National Assembly from NA-77 (Gujranwala-IV) in the 1997 general election. After an unsuccessful 2002 contest, he returned from NA-97 (Gujranwala-III) in 2008 and held that seat through 2018, winning again in 2013. He then represented NA-80 (Gujranwala-II) from 2018 to 2023 and NA-77 Gujranwala-I from February 2024 until his death.
His highest national office came in January 2018, when Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi inducted him into the federal cabinet as Minister for Law and Justice under President Mamnoon Hussain. He held the portfolio until the National Assembly's term ended on 31 May 2018. In the 2024 election he won NA-77 with 109,704 votes, defeating independent candidate Rashida Tariq. Party colleagues also recalled his work as chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Law and Justice.
Family sources said he had been receiving hospital treatment in Lahore for some time before he died. One regional report said he had been suffering from cancer; most mainstream outlets spoke only of prolonged illness and did not name a diagnosis. His funeral prayer was offered on Saturday morning, and he was buried at his ancestral graveyard. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called him a sincere and active parliamentarian and said parliament had been deprived of an active member. Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz and other PML-N figures also paid tribute.
Virk remained associated with the PML-N from his first election in 1997 until 2026 and was regarded as one of Gujranwala's most durable parliamentary figures. Details of his education and immediate family were not fully confirmed in public reporting at the time of his death.
