Patxi Goenaga Mendizabal was a Basque linguist, university professor and member of Euskaltzaindia, the Royal Academy of the Basque Language. Over a career of more than four decades he became one of the leading figures in the modern study of Basque grammar and syntax, and his 1978 book Gramatika bideetan served for years as the standard guide for students of Basque philology.

He was born on 5 May 1948 in Azpeitia, Gipuzkoa. He took a degree in Romance philology at the University of Deusto in 1974 and later earned a doctorate in Basque philology at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in 1984, with a thesis on Basque syntax, complementation and nominalisation, supervised by the great Basque linguist Koldo Mitxelena.

Goenaga directed the Karmelo Ikastola in Bilbao from 1974 to 1976, then taught at the University of Deusto's San Sebastian campus until 1980, when he moved to the University of the Basque Country. There he rose to full professor in 1991, served as dean of the Faculty of Philology and Geography and History from 1986 to 1990, as vice-rector for the Alava campus from 1991 to 1995, and as head of the Department of Basque Philology. He retired in 2011. From 2002 to 2005 he was the Basque Government's deputy minister for language policy.

At Euskaltzaindia he was named a corresponding member in 1979 and a full member in 1995, serving as secretary of its Grammar Committee from 1980 to 1996 and as secretary of the Academy from 1996 to 2002. He took part in the Academy's long-running grammar projects, Euskal Gramatika: Lehen urratsak among them, and worked on dictionary making at UZEI. Gramatika bideetan, one of the first systematic descriptions of Basque drawing on Noam Chomsky's generative model, reached readers far beyond the university and won the Lauburu de Plata prize in 1979. In 2023, the year he became an emeritus academician, he presented Euskal gramatika: egiturak eta osagaiak, a large online grammar published by the University of the Basque Country.

Goenaga died on 30 October 2026 in Vitoria-Gasteiz, aged 78. Euskaltzaindia announced his death the same day, and his funeral was held on 31 October at the church of Nuestra Senora de los Angeles in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The cause of death was not made public.

Goenaga is remembered as one of the main reference points of modern Basque grammar. Gramatika bideetan shaped the training of a generation of Basque philologists, and his later work helped bring the theoretical tools of generative linguistics to the analysis of Basque. Through decades of committee work at Euskaltzaindia, teaching at the University of the Basque Country and his term in the Basque Government, he contributed to both the description and the standardisation of the language. His final major work, EGEO, remains freely available online to students and teachers.
