Phan Thanh Hùng was a Vietnamese footballer and coach who became one of the most successful managers in the history of Vietnamese club football. A versatile forward for his home club in Da Nang, he later led Hà Nội T&T to two V-League titles, took charge of the Vietnam national team in 2012 and spent his final working years developing young players in his home city.
He was born on 30 July 1960 in Da Nang. He played for Quảng Nam-Đà Nẵng from 1980 to 1992 and could play in midfield, up front or in defence when needed. In 1992 he won the national championship with the club and reached the semi-finals of the Asian Cup Winners' Cup, one of the best continental results by a Vietnamese team at the time. In 1993, at the age of 32, he won five caps for Vietnam and scored in a 1994 World Cup qualifier against Singapore in Doha.
After retiring he coached youth teams in Da Nang before becoming head coach of the senior club from 2007 to 2009. He was also an assistant to Henrique Calisto when Vietnam won the AFF Cup in 2008. The peak of his career came at Hà Nội T&T, the forerunner of Hà Nội FC, which he coached from 2010 to 2015. He won the V-League in 2010 and 2013 and the Super Cup in 2010, and he is credited with laying the foundations of the capital club and its attractive short passing game.
In September 2012 he was appointed head coach of the Vietnam national team and the under-23 team, but he resigned after a disappointing AFF Cup later that year. From 2016 to 2020 he coached Than Quảng Ninh, winning the National Cup and the Super Cup in 2016. After a short spell at Becamex Bình Dương he returned to Da Nang, where he later served as technical director of the club, youth training director at the Da Nang youth football centre and a member of the National Coaches Council from 2022.
He was treated for laryngeal cancer, including surgery, and in February 2026 he stepped back from his roles to focus on his health. On 9 August 2026 a vice president of the Vietnam Football Federation visited him at home and presented him with the commemorative medal For the Cause of Vietnamese Football. He died at his home in Da Nang on the evening of 11 August 2026, aged 66.
