Preston C. Carlisle was an Ogdensburg, New York, attorney who practiced law in the North Country for nearly 60 years and became one of the region's best known civic benefactors. He founded the Carlisle Law Firm, served as Corporation Counsel for the City of Ogdensburg and as First Assistant District Attorney of St. Lawrence County, and was the father of NBA head coach Rick Carlisle.

He was born on 6 September 1930, the son of Richard W. and Margaret B. Carlisle. He attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, Fordham University and Iona College before serving four years in the US Army in Washington, D.C., during the Korean War era, working at what is now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. While in the Army he studied law at American University's Washington College of Law, graduating in 1958.

Admitted to the New York State Bar in 1961, he opened his law firm in Ogdensburg's historic Preston King Building in 1962. He became Corporation Counsel for the city in 1963 and was First Assistant District Attorney of St. Lawrence County from 1967 to 1975, then concentrated on building his private practice, which handled negligence, medical malpractice, wrongful death, real estate and estate planning work. He was also counsel for the Lisbon school district and an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, and in 2007 he was named one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers in New York State.

Outside the courtroom he was president of the Kiwanis Club of Ogdensburg, a board member of the Canton College Foundation and a director of the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club, where he was one of the driving forces behind the club's 1975 building. He was inducted into the SUNY Canton Hall of Fame in 2017 and received SUNY Potsdam's Leadership Through Service Award in 2018. In 2022 the Preston C. Carlisle Youth Athletic Center, funded by his family, was dedicated at the Boys and Girls Club.

Carlisle died peacefully at his home in Ogdensburg, surrounded by his family, on 3 October 2026, aged 96. He was survived by Joan, his wife of 69 years, three children, 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
