My mother called this morning just to tell me about it. A cold, she kept saying, she thought it was just a cold. Forty two.

Rachel Weston was a 42 year old care worker from Bury, Greater Manchester, who died suddenly on holiday in Lanzarote on 3 October 2026 after what she had believed was a bad cold turned out to be a cardiac arrest. She worked at a care home in the Bury area and was known, according to her husband, for her kindness and her devotion to her family.
Rachel was not a public figure in the conventional sense. She did not hold elected office, perform on stage or appear on television. Her life and her death became widely known only because local and national newspapers reported on the sudden and shocking nature of her death while abroad, a story that resonated with readers because it began with something as ordinary as a cold. Her husband, Mark Weston, 41, spoke to local press after her death and described her as someone he had never known anyone as nice as, a tribute that was widely quoted in coverage of her death.
Rachel travelled to Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote at the start of October 2026 with her husband Mark and two friends, named in reports as Danny and Paula, for what was the group's first visit to the resort. During the trip she began to feel unwell and, believing she had caught a cold, visited a local pharmacy. She initially seemed to improve, but her condition worsened again, and on Saturday 3 October she and Mark decided to book last minute flights home for the following day.
Before they were able to fly home, Rachel collapsed in their hotel room. Hotel lifeguards attempted to help her before emergency services arrived, and Mark has described the pain of being asked to wait outside the room while efforts were made to save her. Despite those efforts, Rachel could not be revived. Reports citing her husband say she suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.
News of her death spread through UK regional outlets covering Bury and Greater Manchester, as well as international outlets reporting on the circumstances of a British tourist's death in the Canary Islands. Tributes described her as a devoted wife to Mark, a stepmother to his three children and a loving owner of two dogs. As of the time of writing, no inquest findings or official cause of death certificate have been reported publicly, and funeral or memorial arrangements have not yet been announced.
