Rashied M. Schuelke was a 15-year-old from La Crosse, Wisconsin, whose death in a shooting on the city's south side in October 2026 drew immediate local and regional attention and led to a homicide charge against another teenager. He was not a public figure before his death, and little about his daily life, schooling or interests has been reported publicly. What is documented comes almost entirely from police accounts, local news coverage and a brief funeral home notice released in the days after he died.
According to police and surveillance footage described in the criminal complaint, Schuelke had been dropped off by friends in an alleyway on the 600 block of Hood Street in La Crosse on the evening of October 1, 2026. Surveillance video shows Schuelke walking behind the car when gunshots ring out, and he can be seen running down the alleyway with a gun in his hand. First responders found him on the ground at the intersection of 7th Street and Hood Street, and he had reportedly been shot in the heart and in his arm. Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene before he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m.
The La Crosse Police Department said witnesses at the scene identified a 16-year-old, later named as Antonio Johnson, as the person who shot Schuelke and then fled. Surveillance video reportedly shows Johnson running north on the 1200 block of 5th Avenue after the shooting. On October 2, police publicly asked for the community's help locating Johnson, and a criminal complaint and an arrest warrant were filed that same day charging him with one felony count of first-degree intentional homicide. As of the most recent reporting, Johnson had not been taken into custody and the investigation remained active.
The shooting happened near Hamilton Elementary School and prompted a heavy police presence in the neighborhood. La Crosse's mayor, Shaundel Washington-Spivey, and Police Chief Shawn Kudron issued a joint statement afterward, describing the shooting as a tragedy and extending condolences to Schuelke's family and loved ones. The case drew wider coverage because of the ages of both the victim and the suspect, and because it happened in a residential area close to a school.
Schuelke's death is a loss felt by his family, friends and community rather than a matter of wide public record, since he had not yet reached adulthood and left behind no public career or body of work. His passing is remembered here not for fame but because a young life was cut short by gun violence, a story that matters to the people searching for answers about what happened to him.
