My brother had Def Comedy Jam on a VHS he taped off HBO in 91, the projects bit, we watched it so many times the tape wore thin. 57 is no age.

Reggie McFadden (November 30, 1968 to 2026) was an American stand-up comedian, actor and writer who broke through on HBO's Def Comedy Jam in 1991 and spent the final season of Fox's groundbreaking sketch show In Living Color as a cast member. Later in life he built a second career far from Hollywood, founding Olduvai Records, a music label and gold mining company in Tanzania, where he lived for about 18 years.
McFadden was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in some of the borough's toughest neighborhoods. In his own telling, the public housing projects sat directly across the street, and he decided early that if he did not work hard he would end up living in them. Comedy became his way out. He grew up in a creative family: his older sister Bernice L. McFadden became an acclaimed novelist, and his brother Kris McFadden went on to rap under the name Tha Pessimist.
After years of paying his dues in New York comedy clubs, McFadden became a favorite on the city's circuit. His big break came in 1991, when the producers of Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam booked him for HBO. He was an immediate hit, and his routines about growing up in the projects remained some of the show's best remembered sets. He was later credited as a writer on an episode of the show. A small part in Adrian Lyne's 1990 thriller Jacob's Ladder had already given him his first screen credit.
Moving to Los Angeles, he quickly found television work. In 1993 he guest starred on Martin, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper and Coach, and that autumn he joined In Living Color for its fifth and final season (1993 to 1994). He appeared in 23 episodes, in sketches such as "Wheel of Dozens," "All Up in the Family" and the "Dirty Dozens Tournament of Champions." In 1994 he played MC Madman in the coming-of-age film The Inkwell.
Through the rest of the 1990s McFadden worked steadily on both coasts. He appeared on Moesha, the anthology series Gun and Full Frontal Comedy, and did stand-up on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and the Late Show with David Letterman, where his 1996 set earned him an invitation to the couch. In 1998 he starred in Fox's short-lived office comedy Getting Personal, performed at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, and headlined his own half-hour special, Comedy Central Presents: Reggie McFadden, which his official bio describes as the highest-rated comedy special on the network. He also performed regularly at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and was a paid regular at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles.
He played Dad in Adam Sandler's Little Nicky (2000), turned up in a 2001 episode of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm as Officer Burt, a police officer who is Larry David's Malibu neighbor, and played Psycho in the 2003 film Road Kings. That year he also performed on NBC's Last Call with Carson Daly.
Around 2008 McFadden moved to Tanzania. There he founded Olduvai Records, which describes itself as a global music label and private eco gold mining company. The label signed a distribution deal with Sony Music's The Orchard in New York, and McFadden released his own music through it, including the single "We Were In Luv" and, in May 2025, the compilation album ENJOY, Vol. 1, a rap, R&B and Afro sound collection.
In early October 2026 his sister Bernice told The Hollywood Reporter that the U.S. State Department had notified the family that he had died in Tanzania. He was 57. The family said they did not yet know the date or the cause of his death. Fellow comedian Guy Torry remembered him as "a great writer, comedian, actor, father, and friend." He is survived by his mother, Vivian; his sons, Jaron and Myles; his sisters, Bernice and Misty; and his brother, Kris.
