RJ Mitte was an American actor, producer and disability rights advocate, best known for playing Walter White Jr., the teenage son of Bryan Cranston's Walter White, across all five seasons of the AMC drama Breaking Bad from 2008 to 2013. Like his character, Mitte lived with cerebral palsy, and his performance brought rare, authentic visibility to the condition on mainstream television.
He was born Roy Frank Mitte III on August 21, 1992, in Jackson, Mississippi. Delivered by emergency caesarean and not breathing at birth, he suffered a brain injury and was adopted a few weeks later by Roy Frank Mitte Jr. and Dyna Mitte. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at three, wore leg braces and used crutches for much of his childhood, and grew strong enough through sport and exercise to walk unaided by his teens. After his mother became paralyzed, he took on financial responsibility for his family at the age of 13.
The family moved to Los Angeles in 2006, when his younger sister was offered film work. After a few jobs as an extra, including on Hannah Montana, Mitte took acting lessons and was soon cast as Walter Jr. The role made him a familiar face around the world. He went on to a recurring part as Campbell in Switched at Birth, voiced Mind Master in the Netflix series The Guardians of Justice, and appeared in films including Time Share, Standing Up for Sunny, The Oak Room and Triumph, which he also executive produced. He modeled for Gap and walked for Vivienne Westwood, and presented for Channel 4 at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
Advocacy ran through all of it. Mitte was the Screen Actors Guild spokesman for actors with disabilities, a celebrity ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, and president of his own charity, the Mitte Foundation. In 2013 he received the SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award for his portrayal of Walter Jr.
Mitte died on October 12, 2026, in Brownsville, Texas, a place where his family had deep roots, at the age of 34. His representatives confirmed the news but did not give a cause; TMZ reported, citing a county official, that his death was a suicide, and the investigation was described as ongoing. In the days before, he had been promoting his new film Talking to Strangers. He was engaged to his partner of eight years, Kennedy Suarez.
