Saimir Vishaj was an Albanian criminal defence lawyer, lecturer and public commentator on the justice system. For almost three decades he was one of the best known names in Albania's criminal courts, and from 2009 he led the Association of Criminal Lawyers of Albania. He died on 3 November 2026 at the Trauma Hospital in Tirana, aged 60, two days after being admitted with serious injuries from a fall down a staircase.
Vishaj graduated as a jurist from the Faculty of Law of the University of Tirana in 1996 and began practising as a lawyer in 1998. Over the following years he represented clients in a number of high profile criminal cases and became a familiar face in Albanian television studios, where he spoke frankly about the problems of the courts and the institutions of justice.
Alongside his practice he taught at private universities and at the National School of Advocacy, and he took part in working groups on amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure. In October 2025 he announced his candidacy for the post of People's Advocate, Albania's ombudsman, and began collecting signatures in support of his bid.
In 2025 he survived a grave illness. He later told Top Channel and Vizion Plus that his ordeal began when he collapsed after a court hearing and spent seven days in a coma. When doctors in Albania could not establish a diagnosis he was taken to Italy, where serious infections were found and treated. He said he had come through three rounds of chemotherapy and three comas, and after about four months of treatment and rehabilitation he walked again and returned to the courtroom. He spoke of starting each day at six with exercise, physiotherapy and a strict diet, of his wife staying at his side in Italy, and of his love for his sons.
His recovery made the news of his death all the more shocking. Albanian outlets reported it within hours, describing him as one of the country's leading criminal lawyers and a constant voice in the public debate about justice. Many recalled the advice he had given on television only months earlier: to enjoy life with its good and its bad, and to put family above everything.

In their own words
