Sanjay Gupta, the Indian filmmaker who built his career on stylised, high octane crime thrillers and action dramas, died on 30 October 2026 in Mumbai at the age of 59. He was one of Hindi cinema's most recognisable genre directors, credited with popularising a slick, neo noir visual style that he brought to a string of films over three decades.
Born on 23 October 1969 in Mumbai, Gupta made his directorial debut in 1994 with Aatish: Feel the Fire, a gangster drama starring Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Pancholi. He went on to direct Ram Shastra, Hameshaa and Jung before his 2002 film Kaante, an ensemble heist thriller inspired by Reservoir Dogs and featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty, became one of the defining crime films of its era and cemented his reputation as a director unafraid to openly rework Hollywood genre templates for Indian audiences.
Over the following two decades Gupta directed and produced a run of films that leaned into urban crime, encounter cop stories and underworld sagas, among them Musafir, Zinda, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Dus Kahaniyaan, Shootout at Wadala, Jazbaa, Kaabil and Mumbai Saga. He worked repeatedly with actors such as Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham, and his 2017 revenge thriller Kaabil, starring Hrithik Roshan, was among his biggest commercial successes. He ran his own production company, White Feather Films, through which he produced and directed most of his work, often clashing publicly with collaborators and producers along the way even as he kept finding backing for his next project.
Gupta's death was first reported by Indian entertainment outlets on the morning of 31 October 2026, with initial accounts stating that he had suffered an accidental fall in the bathroom of his home the previous night and was not discovered until the following morning. No official cause of death has been confirmed, and his family had not issued a public statement at the time of this report. News of his passing prompted an outpouring of grief and tribute from across the Hindi film industry, with colleagues and admirers describing him on social media as a passionate, visionary filmmaker who had shaped a distinct corner of Indian commercial cinema.
Gupta is remembered as a director who gave Hindi cinema a recognisable brand of stylised crime storytelling, built around slick action, moody lighting and ensemble casts of major stars. Friends and industry colleagues have also recalled him as a man with an easy, ever present smile despite a personal and professional life that was far from smooth, including a widely reported divorce from his wife followed by their remarriage some years later.
