Five years of nothing and then this week the phone rings and my sister says they finally arrested someone. I was standing in my kitchen in Boulder City when I heard he was gone in 2021, and I remember thinking a man can't get shot in the street near Fairway and nobody answer for it. Forty years old. A wife and a little boy waiting on him.

Scott Phillip Dingman was a journeyman lineman for NV Energy and a father and husband living in Boulder City, Nevada, whose 2021 killing became the subject of a long fight for justice that ended, more than five years later, in a murder arrest. He was 40 years old when he was shot to death in the street near his home, and for years the man who admitted pulling the trigger faced no criminal charge at all.
Dingman was born on January 17, 1981, in Watertown, New York. He married Ashley Chaney on November 16, 2011, and the couple had a son, Ethan, born the following year. Those who knew him described a devoted family man who coached youth wrestling, rode motorcycles, hunted, fished, and rarely missed one of his son's games or matches. He worked on a utility line crew he considered a second family.
On the night of Memorial Day, May 31, 2021, Dingman was shot in the roadway of Fairway Drive near Pueblo Drive in Boulder City. He was pronounced dead hours later of gunshot wounds to the chest and groin, and the Clark County coroner's office ruled his death a homicide. The man who shot him, an acquaintance named John Powell Morgan III, told police he had acted in self-defense after Dingman struck him and drew a firearm during an argument following heavy drinking. Police largely accepted that account, and the Clark County district attorney determined at the time that no viable charges could be filed, leaving the case closed without any criminal charge against Morgan.
For his family, that was never the end of the story. His widow, Ashley Dingman, and his brother Josh, who serves in the U.S. Navy, spent years publicly pressing Boulder City police to reexamine the shooting, saying the original investigation had been mishandled. A local investigative reporting team kept returning to the case, and even after Boulder City officials agreed to reopen it, the family said for months that the renewed investigation appeared stalled. Each Memorial Day weekend, friends and relatives rode motorcycles through the area to mark the anniversary of his death and keep attention on the case.
The case turned in 2025, when an unrelated drug investigation into Morgan uncovered further evidence tied to the 2021 shooting, including firearms and other material that prosecutors viewed as significant. Boulder City detectives reviewed the killing again, and on Saturday, October 24, 2026, more than five years after Dingman was killed, police arrested Morgan on one count of open murder with the use of a deadly weapon. He was taken into custody at a car dealership in Henderson, Nevada, and booked into the Clark County Detention Center, where he was being held without bail.
Scott Dingman is remembered by family and friends as a loving husband, a devoted father, and a hard worker whose death left his then eight year old son without a father for years before any arrest was made. The charge against Morgan brought relief to a family that had refused to let the case go cold, even as the legal process over what happened on Fairway Drive that Memorial Day was only now set to begin.
