Shana M. Umbreit was a 36 year old woman from Harbor Beach, Michigan, whose disappearance and death became the subject of a monthslong homicide investigation spanning two states. She was last seen alive on January 23, 2026, at a gas station in her hometown on the Lake Huron shore, and was reported missing two days later. For nearly three weeks, Harbor Beach police and volunteers searched the small community for any sign of her, a search that drew in neighbors, local officers and, eventually, investigators hundreds of miles away.
On February 13, 2026, a passerby walking in a rural, marshy area off a county road in DeKalb County, Indiana, roughly 270 miles from Harbor Beach, noticed a body lying in the snow. Sheriff's deputies who responded located a deceased woman, and investigators soon suspected she might be the missing Michigan woman whose case had been circulating in news alerts for weeks. Forensic testing confirmed on February 17, 2026, that the body was Umbreit's, and the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office announced the same day that an autopsy had ruled her death a homicide. Investigators did not disclose how she died.
Umbreit's case mattered to the Harbor Beach community because her disappearance from a small, tight knit town, followed by the discovery of her body so far from home, raised immediate and difficult questions about what had happened to her and who was responsible. Her death also set off a cross jurisdictional investigation involving police in Michigan, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office in Indiana, and eventually federal agents, as authorities worked to piece together her final days and the route her body took after she vanished.
The investigation moved slowly through the following months. Court records that surfaced later showed that federal agents had, around the same time Umbreit went missing, been investigating a Harbor Beach man named Jared Cash Butterfield on a separate firearms charge, and that a witness had given investigators information about him in connection with the case, though officials did not confirm the two investigations were formally linked. It was not until October 15, 2026, nearly nine months after Umbreit's death, that the Huron County Prosecutor's Office announced the first criminal charge directly tied to the case: a Harbor Beach man, Steven Jones, was charged with failing to disclose a dead body to police, a funeral home or emergency services. A judge set his bond at fifty thousand dollars, and his next court hearing was scheduled for October 30, 2026. As of this writing, no one has been charged with killing Umbreit, and the circumstances of her death remain under investigation.
Little has been made public about Umbreit's personal life, including her occupation, education or family circumstances, and this page will be updated as verified information becomes available. What is known is that her death left her hometown searching for answers for months, and that the case remains open as prosecutors continue to build toward accountability for what happened to her.
